1/17 twist in .308

Re: 1/17 twist in .308

What cartridge is it (guessing 308 win from what you said but I think it is more common on 30BR)? It for a 300 yard and under benchrest gun? Probably relegated to the 130 grain and under flat-base bullets. If it were me I'd probably start with IMR8208 for 308Win in the light bullets.

At 10,000 feet, and with 3200fps at 90 degrees, I say: Go for it!

Graham you are exactly right!!!! I must say I am impressed with your knowledge on this. He was a 30BR shooter and designed this in a 308 Hart Barrel etc. It shoot well with 45gr. of 4895 IMR 110 gr bullet. I was just curious if anyone else was familiar with this oddity or may shoot something similar. Thanks for the feedback and keep it coming.

Re: 1/17 twist in .308

This is going to be an oddball. Try 125/135SMK's and a faster powder like IMR/H-4198. It could work well, but it's definitely not going to favor heavy bullets or slower powders. I am currently shooting a .30BR with the 125SMK and 31gr of H-4198. But my barrel was made froma 22" 1:10" blank. Only 50 rounds downrange so far, but accuracy is getting competitive at 250yd.
