Recently got some funds to purchase optic I've wanted for a long time, Trijicon TA-33 ACOG. I now have been looking hard at the Leupold HAMMR. Reticles of the two are very similar. I really like the 1-3x ability of the Leupold vs 4x fixed of the ACOG, but leery of the longevity of the illumination (Leupold electronics warranty is 1 yr). Optic is going to be used between an M4 and M1A. Any experience/opinion with these two is greatly appreciated!!

Re: HAMMR or ACOG...Opions?

Not a direct answer, but a warranty communicates a companies confidence in their product based on some correlation to MTTF. This is contrasted with a companies willingness to jeopardize their reputation by selling a product that dies right when the warranty ends and some engineering factors are considered.

From the HAMR website:
Warranties on Leupold® Mark 4®, Mark 2®, Mark AR™, and Tactical optical products vary depending on use and other factors. For more information regarding the warranties on these products, contact Leupold at 1-800-LEUPOLD or (503) 526-1400.

The fact that it is cagey and not in writing would give me great pause.

Contrast that with what is written here:
http://www.trijicon.com/na_en/support/warranty.php
and I would personally consider the decision made.

If you aren't prepared to drop the cost of the product at the interval of the warranty, I would steer clear.

Re: HAMMR or ACOG...Opions?

rockrat, thanks....you are affirming what I was thinking/feeling. I have Leupold on all my hunting rifles and their customer service has been top notch, but I was surprised by the shortness of their warranty on the electronic components of their tactical line.

Re: HAMMR or ACOG...Opions?

I love ACOGs. Mine have always held up to serious abuse. The one I have has been downrange with me, bumped all around military vehicles, on patrol, etc. It's always held zero, always tracked, and the illum is still good in low light. If I'm going to war with an M4, I'll take an ACOG every time.

Re: HAMMR or ACOG...Opions?

I had an ACOG in the late 90's in while active duty, yes while they are still viable options, I believe I would get a newer scope in the 1-6 range now. I think the variable scopes are more versatile in more applications than the fixed ACOG's . The leupold 1-6 MK 6 is on the short list of variable power optics that are coming out.

Re: HAMMR or ACOG...Opions?

I think you are confusing the HAMR with the CQ/T - the HAMR is a fixed 4x while the CQ/T is variable 1-3x. Both are available with the CMR2 reticle.

Re: HAMMR or ACOG...Opions?

I saw that you mentioned the TA33, but also mentioned the ACOG being a 4X. Unless I'm mistaken, the TA33 is a 3X. Not that it's a big deal.

I can whole heartedly recommend the ACOGs. Very tough equipment. Personally, I like the 1.5X, 2X and 3X models the most. They have the most forgiving eye relief and are very flexible

Re: HAMMR or ACOG...Opions?

I have 4 ACOG's on AR's but if I had it to do over again I would have gotten the NF 1-4X24 on all four AR's that they are on now. I have one on my LMT CQB with the FC2 reticle and really like it.

Re: HAMR or ACOG...Opions?

Great info and thanks to all. Absolutely correct...-33 is 3x, what I meant to type was -31. Also correct, the HAMR is fixed power, I guess I was thinking of the CQ/T. I'm a 50yr old guy looking for a tough optic to use between my AR15 and RFB for bumping around the property, homestead defense, and fun on the range. As much as I'd like to think so...won't be breaking down doors and doing CQB with ninjas or sniping terrorists at 1000yds (daughters boyfriends maybe

) I need to be realistic before I drop this kind of coin. Using a C-more right now which is working GREAT, but sometimes wish:
1. I had more than 1x and single red dot.
2. Not worry about the optic getting bounced around or smacking into something when out on the property, because I do drag my rifles through brush and muck and not afraid to get myself or weapons dirty when need be.

I really like the bcd reticle on the ACOG and HAMR and absolutely love the clarity of the ACOG glass out to edges. Have not had the opportunity to look through the HAMR, but expect the same quality (thanks tactical for the feedback!). I'll have to re-look the variable options but really like the FOV out of a 30+mm tubes vs usual 24mm of the variables. Am I expecting too much out of one scope?
Still appreciate more experience/recommendations with the different optics!

You folks ROCK!!

Re: HAMR or ACOG...Opions?

Rhino,

As I said before (I think), I have had a good bit of experience with ACOGs, but have never shot a HAMR. In any case, I would highly recommend trying before buying any ACOG, if you aren't familiar with them. The eye relief on them varies by model and you really can't make any judgments based on their published specs.

I can say that I've never shot a 4X ACOG that I liked. I found the eye relief to be too short and that made shooting in awkward positions difficult for me.

You also have to keep in mind that ACOGs are specialized optics and I personally find that they don't do well as general purpose optics. Of course, opinions differ. Another thing to consider, in light of your reference to the BDC reticles, is that these reticles are calibrated for a specific weight bullet in a specific caliber moving at a certain velocity when it leaves the muzzle.

As much as I like ACOGs, the only one that I'm running now is a little TA44S-10, 1.5X model. I suffer from astigmatism and my eyes are getting old. I use it as a compromise between an Aimpoint and Eotech. It has the rock solid reliability of an Aimpoint with a reticle similar to that of an Eotech. You'd be surprised at how much of a difference that little .5X magnification makes. I have no problems hitting golf balls at 100 yards and beyond.

Like the other poster above, I found the compact Nightforce scopes to be better general purpose optics. I have one each of the 1.4X and the 2.5-10X. Heck, for around $500, you could get into a Vortex PST. That scope isn't shabby at all.
