308 starting load

Just picked up a 700 P 5R .308

Last time I loaded .308 was for my M1A ( 168 SMK's ) 200/300/600 yd. National Matches.

I have 1k of 168's and another 1k of 173's.

Looking for a good start.

Around 43 grains of varget with the 175s works for me. 44 grains usually worked with the 168s. Reloder 17 is worth a look too.

Reloading manual has starting charges. I suggest you work your own loads up from there. Lots of threads with 308 load data; do a bit of searching and you will find tons.

44.5 grs varget with a 168 win primer win brass

42 grs 4064 with a 175 lake city brass win primer
Both at 2.800 Mag length
If those don't shoot well half of the shooting world are liars....

My last 4 308 rifles (one semi and the other bolt guns) all shot 168g Amax and SMK with 44g varget and win brass at MOA or better.
Have used this out to about 600 yds with great results.
