Which do you recommend on a carbine build? I'm building my first Carbine/AR and could use the input as far as which application is better the fixed vs. variable and why?

Re: Best AR/Carbine Scope under 400?

I have the 3-10 Midway exclusive Weaver on my 18" 6.8 SPC. It has been a great scope for the money.

The normal price is $399 at Midway, but the run them on sale for $299 every other month. Get one on sale and you can put the $100 bucks towards a mount or rings.

Run a search for it and watch the video review.

Don't laugh when I tell you this, but you may want to check out this scope and mount combo that SWFA is offering: Optisan 1-4x24 Mamba & EAR30 Mount

The mount I would give a $40-50 value to so the scope is really only costing you ~$100. Anyhow...I read many good reviews on here and elsewhere so I figured what the heck and got one. I haven't had it too long, but so far everything has been as expected from the reviews. The only thing I'm not the happiest with is the illumination (especially the green) isn't the best, but for the price...well worth the money.

Definately target/plinking, but I'm pretty set on mil scopes. I've looked at a few of the non mil scopes which aren't bad (have a non mil leupold on my browning. 270) but for the RRA Carbine I definately was gonna go Mil

Re: Best AR/Carbine Scope under 400?

If you are shooting under 400 yards why do you need a mil reticle?
You can pretty easily 'guestirange' targets and animals under 400 yards. Also if you know your ballistics, you can easily hold-over or come-up pretty quickly without doing the math commonly associated with the use of MilDot. Also MilDots are only effective at determining range if you know your target size.
I am suggesting this because one of my favorite hunting scopes is the Leupold VX III, 2.5-8 x36mm with Duplex reticle. I have 4 of them on my bolt guns (.223, .243, .308, .300 RSUAM Mountain Rifle, and also 2 in the Mark 4 illuminated on AR-10's.
They are light, short, compact, good light transmission and color clarity and priced right at $399 most everywhere.
The Mark 4's are much more expensive though.
