Rifle Scopes Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

I've played with a Vortex psd that I installed on a friends rifle, but that's my only experience with them. I also own 2 Nightforces, but in the 3-15x. Honestly if I had to choose between the 2, I would pick the Nightforce based on proven reliability and solid reputation. I'm sure the Vortex is an amazing scope as well, but jmho. Plus Nightforce has a ton of reticle options and a better zero stop function.

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

First off you need to decide on FFP or SFP and mil or moa. That might make your decision a little easier, at least until NF puts out a FFP in the 5.5-22x.

I had a Razor that I recently sold after a couple range trips. I replaced it with a NF 5.5-22x50mm HS ZS MOAR ret. The Razor is a quality scope but there were a few things that I didn't like about it. The only important things I didn't like about it was the reticle was hard to see on 5x(I had the EBR-3) and the illumination pretty much sucked. It has 11 settings but only 2 were worth a damn. Some of the settings couldn't be seen even it a completely dark bathroom and the brightest setting was bright as shit. I found one setting that worked for my low-light shooting needs. To nit pick I didn't care for the useless fiber optic thingys on the turret and power ring. I also didn't like the rubber on the power ring. The tube is huge with its 125moa of adjustment compared to the 30mm tube on the NXS with its 100moa. The NF zero stop is better then the Razor as are the turrets in general. The Razor tracked well and the glass was about as good as the NF, though I'm not a glass freak. I also didn't like the color of the Razor. I'm not sure why but it bothered me. Vortex calls it stealth black but its more like stealth brown. They should finish it like they do the PST line which is much better IMO. I know some folks are really liking their Razors, it just wasn't for me. Vortex does have great CS and a no BS warranty. I went back to SFP and moa in the NF with the MOAR reticle which I'm liking a whole lot more. IMO, NF makes a better scope and when they come out with FFP's in higher mags it will be no contest.

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

i had the nf 5.5-22x56 and i switched to the razor. there was nothing at all wrong with the nightforce, but i wanted ffp.

to me your situation is less about 2 scopes and more about ffp vs sfp. figure out if you want ffp or sfp and the scope choice will take care of itself.

I would completely agree with this statement with one exception.

The target shooting part of the equation.

If you're like me, I prefer a thin reticle when shooting precision. I have a rifle and load that will consistently shoot .25-.3 moa when I am on. I had a really hard time keeping that kind of accuracy and precisely placing my shots with the Razor. Other than that I loved that scope.

In this one area, the HDMR with the G2 reticle is the best of both worlds, good FFP reticle with a thin portion in the center. I shot a bee at 100 yds. moments after sighting mine in for the first time. It will work great for target work.

I had an NXS 5.5-22 and loved it. A great scope. But if you *ever* hold for wind or elevation, you *will* screw up eventually. FFP removes that questions.

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

i've got a nightforce and a schmidt and bender and wouldn't trade either of them for anything. That being said a buddy of mine has a vortex scope of some kind (including the Razor and Viper PST) on about 6 of his rifles and swears by them, going as far as comparing the Razor to the S&B. He also used one of the Viper PST 1-4X during a current overseas deployment and I'm currently testing one out for the company and can tell you so far they are outstanding. I'm a big Nightforce fan but if you're looking for a 20 power or higher FFP scope you can't beat the Razor.

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

I sold 2 nxs for 2 razors. For me it was ffp vs sfp. If i am on too low of mag to see the subtensions in the reticle, I probaly don't need to hold for wind at that distance.

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

Nightforce...The new MOAR reticle is really good for a hunting scope, but the crosshair is thicker than some other reticles. I prefer the NP2 DD for 1000yd target shooting.

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

Vortex is popular on this forum, for a good reason they work. The glass is clear and bright. Turrets have a tactile feel as you make adjustments and the scope tracks with those adjustments.

The other plus to the Vortex brand is a lifetime warranty. Their customer service get positive marks.

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

I'm a big NF fan, but I'm having a hard time finding any faults in the Vortex products. I have their spotting scope (HD Razor) their Solo hand held monocular, and a PST 1-4, I like all of them. Now their Razor has 10mil knobs, what more could one ask for in a sub 2k optic.

I totally agree on the reticle. I wish Vortex would redesign the crosshair-it should be a closed fine reticle. I've taken to using the first .5 mil hash mark as my aiming point rather than the open cross hair.

I have two Razors - one on a 260 Remington and one on a .308. I purchased them specifically for the FFP, zero stop, warranty and customer service.

I have the EBR2B reticle and find it excellent at all zoom levels.

I haven't used the IR, even in the limited low-light shooting I've done. The 35mm tube sucks up a LOT of light.

I actually liked both of these. YMMV

What about the zero stop is better? I figure it stops, reliably, every time. That seems pretty good.

One complaint I have - if you over-tighten the scope rings you can lock out the parallax/focus. I've never had this problem with my first Razor but I did with the second. Of course Vortex fixed for free and that was that.

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

NF all the way-----just bought my first one 8months ago.....I own 4 NF to date...had no idea the quality and precision. Like they Say Buy once Cry once!

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

Have used both and both are very very nice. I wanted FFP though so I got a Razor over the 5.5-22 Nightforce. Don't think you can make a bad decision between the two.
Debating the quality between the two is useless. They are both tanks.

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

I own 2 NF NXS 5.5-22X50 scopes and just got a Vortex 4-16X50 PST. The only thing I don't care for on the Vortex is at 4X the reticle is to fine for me. It becomes useful for my eyes at 5x or greater. I have no complaints with the NF scope but at half the price the Vortex is a winner.

just sayin...</div></div>

That could be due to NightForce trying to fill military contracts, while keeping up with new orders.

Just sayin...

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

Nightforce makes some great scopes in nearly all respects, but the lack of an externally adjustable brightness for the illumination seems like a big compromise (for those who use illumination). When people say the factory set illumination level works just fine it sounds like rationalization to me.

Just about every other illuminated scope has a knob for adjusting levels, so I'm not sure what makes Nightforce incapable of doing the same.

You're probably right - but the net effect of that still sucks for civvies that need their scope fixed. Don't get me wrong, I want our boys in uniform to be first priority, and NF absolutely has their priorities straight.

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

I have never used a nf, that being said I have 4 vortex scopes, and have not had to rethink optics. Use them on 6.5x284,.300wsm,.308,.338lm. Never had a issue with them. The great warranty, and service on vortex, is second to none in my opinion. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

i've been using and selling nightforce for several years now. I've had to send a handful of scopes back, mainly due to user error, stuff like removing the zero stop, screws, the parallax or magnification ring not lining up with the lines on the scope tube exactly. every once in a while I see someone talk about issues with a nightforce, let me assure you, that is the exception, not the rule.

that being said, i've not had any issue with vortex either, and when something has come up, they are swift to correct the issue. both companies are great to deal with on customer and dealer level.

I agree and when I sent in my warranty card, in the blank where it asked what I'd like to see available, I said a 5.5-22x F1 and an external illumination feature.

this is what they said when it went in...

"its going to sit on the shelf for at least 30 days before we even look at it... we dought it really has a tracking issue..."

it did....

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

I refer all my friends who cant or wont aford a NF to the Vortex line, havent shot with a vortex much but handeling them and looking through them they seem great for the $.

i personaly run a NF 5.5-22x56 np-r1 hs/zs, but am in the market for another optic, and will most likley get a PST.

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

also, we put my buddys NF next no my razor in the day and at dusk...

in the day we both said, the pic was the same... at dusk, the razor had a slight edge..

but the other features of the razor beat the NXS..

Re: Help me choose Vortex or Nightforce??!!

Of the two you listed, I'd say the Vortex Razor for sure.

I'd also look at the non illuminated SWFA SS 5-20 that are going for about $1k in the classifieds here. Possibly the best FFP value out there right now.
