Have Savage 30-06 with simmons 3x9 cheapie on. Cant hardy see a 300 yard 12x12 target with it. Will use rifle for hunting and considering 3X9 Zeiss while on sale. Wondering if I should get that or opt for 3x12 or 4x16 in other brand that is around the $400 mark?

Just my humble opinion...at least a 12x...
9x will work for 300 yards, but 12x is far better. You should be able to get a decent 12 or 14x for around $400.
My son uses a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x 40...its a good hunting scope and I believe it was right around $400 (actually a little less)
I just bought a 4-16x (Vortex)which is bordering on too much for hunting...but my eyes ain't what they were 20 years ago.

The 3-9x Zeiss will do just fine for hunting out to 300 yards especially for deer-sized game. They have really bright and clear glass. It will be a big step up in optical quality from the Simmons.

If you're looking at the conquest, why not give Meopta a try. The Meopro 4-12 would be a good way to go. However nothing wrong with a 3-9.

Not seeing a foot wide target at 300 is probably due to bad eyes or (more likely) the cheapy simmons having the optical quality of a shot glass.
Hell I hit clay birds at 300yards with a 1-4X vortex PST.
Meopta and Conquest are made in the same factory I think. There is also the Cabelas Super Euro something scope that is made by Meopta. They are much more clear which will help with target recognition.

Yep Meopta has their hands in a bunch of things, that until recently I never knew. I got to sit down with those guys at their factory for a couple of days and they are a very interesting company.

You can't go wrong with a Zeiss 3-9x on a hunting rifle. I have a couple of them and thier optic quality and clarity are excellent. I also have one Nikon 4.5-14x, it has worked but the Zeiss is a far superior optic.

As has already been said, I've used several Zeiss 3-9 over the years. The glass is great and you should love it. Go for it
