so here i am at the range this weekend with my new 458 socom savage. 16" barrel and having great results with 325 ftx bullets .980 5 shots at one hundred yards when i pull out my load for the barnes 500 tsx bullet.
i squeeze the trigger and it goes sproinggg and nothing. i open the bolt and gas blows out the side of the gun. not much mind you more of a hiss. remove the bolt and case like normal no issue there check the bore and 1" from the muzzle there sits my 500 grain bullet. the load i am using is a "published load" for 500's any ideas how to fix this? crimp is nice and tight , powder charge is five % below the max, oal is .005 off the lands.

-i have not loaded for subsonic velocities before
-i am not new to reloading
-looking to get information from others that have loaded similar rounds before , not people that are regurgitating info they were told by their uncle lester the last time they were at the range.

thanks

Re: 458 socom 500gr load

Well, I have a SOCOM, but have not yet reloaded subsonics for it yet, but I have loaded other cartridges for subs.

Without having your data for the load used, I'll just say that CCI 350 (magnum LP) are the standard (recommended) primer for the SOCOM. Other domestic LP primers (I don't know about Wolf/Tula) all supposed to give significantly lower velocities (and therefore pressure) for a given powder charge.

Remember to work down, not up, when loading for subsonic to help prevent stuck bullets

If you are using the latest (that I know of) Accurate Powder information, be aware that they used large RIFLE primers for their SOCOM data while their previous data used LPM primers. Accurate confirmed the use of LR primers, but have yet to respond to my query about problems deepening the primer pocket. This LPM to LR primer change resulted in significantly lower powder charges.

Perhaps your 5% below max charge was too low given a different primer and the lower (newest Accurate data) charge weights?

Re: 458 socom 500gr load

thanks for the help. i have gotten this under comtrol finally.
the issue was using to little powder in the case with a primer that was not lighting off hot enough.

mistakes-
not using enough powder , found loads and backed off 10% WAY TO LIGHT could have been bad

not using correct primers for load data

heads up for everyone else.
