Remington 722 as base?

I was wondering if using a Remington 722 action as a basis for a long range precision rifle? I plan to drop it into a AICS.

Really no reason not to. Minor differences between it and the M700.

Go ahead with it, the 721/722 were a little better built than the 700's, I have a 721 in a home made bench rest stock and it is really solid, the 721/722 trigger is one of the best I have ever dealt with.

There are 3 Remington action lengths... basically

XP-100/600/660/XP-100R/Seven
Handle location = 3.850"
Shorter rear receiver bridge than S/A's
Action screws = 1/4-28 front & # 8 rear

722/40X/700 S/A
Handle location=4.375"
1 pc scope bridge will interchange with above receiver spacing.
Action screws=1/4"-28 front/1/4"-28 rear/# 8 center for ADL applications.

721/Sportsman78/700 L/A
Handle location=5.215"
Dimension/width between feed rails differs between .473"/.532"/.588" bolt face applications.
Action screws=1/4"-28 front/1/4"-28 rear/# 8 center for ADL applications.

ADL/BDL mag boxes differ in height for different stock inlet/trigger guards.
SAUM & Ultra mag boxes are "windowed" for rebated/.532" case head clearance.

XP-100 & 40X receivers are faced from the Custom Shop prior to barreling.

All action diameters are not centerless ground, they are grained/sanded so diameters vary.

A 30-06 varies from a 300WM only by bolt face diameter & barrel profile. The receivers are machined identically.

Wow Bradley! That's a great list of comparisons between the Remington actions!

I was going to ask if a one piece scope base, like a 20moa picatiny rail, is the same between 700 and 722 but it looks like you answered that question. It will work.

Actually the XP-100 and the 600/660's are the same length, about 3/8" shorter than a 700 short but the XR-100 and Model 7 are not the same length as the earlier XP and 600 series, they are roughly 1/4" shorter than a 700 but longer than the XP-100/600/660's.

Feed rails are different on short actions between 222/223 etc and 700/722's barreled for 22/250, 243, 308 etc. At least the ones I have owned.

Also there was a short action Sportsman 78 which is identical except bolt knob and finish from a 700 short.

I have rebarreled 2 early XP's and a 40-X and they were not 'faced', looked to be cut the same as any 700 I have worked on.

So actually there are 4 action lengths.

I believe the rear tang is a little thicker than a 700 and will need a little work. Great action to build on though. Some of the smoothest rails and cycling of all the Rem. actions.

It is a very good action to build a long range 5.56 rifle, assuming your caliber is .222; you can convert it to .223 or 5.56.

Since you can install any Remington 700 .223 barrel on your Remington 722 .222 caliber, without further adjustments. It's easy to build a good precision rifle; It does not necessarily require the work of a gunsmith, although if you can afford it will guarantee better results.

The second thing to do is mill a good picatinny rail on the receiver of the action to improve accuracy.

The rest is just selecting the accessories of your preference.

I'm really sorry to revive an old thread.

But I feel the need to share my experience building my rifle.

Well, it could be that many members could have access to own this model and keep it forgotten because they are unaware of its potential.
