Hey Gang,

Anybody know where to get dummy powder and primers? I want to have my students actually make ammo, but finding somebody who'll rent a classroom to you for this purpose is getting tough.

If im not using the real deal then I can get this project going.

Also If anybody knows of a Power point presentation thats out there it would be useful

Thanks
Frank

Poppy seeds! If price is no object? Seems like spent primers would be the easiest, least expensive option? Salt probably would meter fairly well, it just looks kinda dorky and I think it would be unduly abrasive, in a powder measure. Think how sand would mess up a powder measure and you have an idea what salt would do. How about this? Use regular powder and just tell everybody it has been deactivated by soaking in WD40. No? Okay. Where are you going to find plastic bullets? Seriously, cream of wheat or corn meal might be your best choice. I don't think the students will take it seriously until you use real components. BB

not sure how easy they come out but you could remove the anvil out of the primers. spay paint the grits with gray/silver paint and the beginners wont know the diff.

For simulated powder I'd use CousCous or Quinoa. Spent primers would be the way to go, but another option would be to contact one of the primer manufacturers and see if buying just the outer shell would be possible. I'd think they would like the fact you were teaching students how to reload and would support it.

I'm not on board with removing the anvil from live primers! Yikes!

Yeah on the toothpicks, just like cordite. lol

I agree with FNP regarding coffee, but maybe the black plastic sinking pellets, similar to these HERE could work too.

great ideas guys. I was thinking spent primers from the beginning. I like the grits idea. I think suger and salt would damage my auto charge though. I just need something to represent stick powder

Re: Looking for Dummy powder and primers to teach with

If you really want to get detailed, then actually use live primers and seat them into empty brass. Cook them off by placing them on a hotplate. Then simply decap and use the dead primers that still look new on the outside.

And using either coffee or Black Quinoa to simulate the powder would be realistic'er too.

But salt? That's just crazy. Don't use salt around ANY of your components.

I am with the cream of wheat and used primers. I just threw away about 500 of them last week I would have sent you. Sure someone here has a bunch. Way to go on teaching reloading my hats off to you.

Thanks for the offer, much appreciated. I never clean my press tray so I wont have to go far to find primers =)
