anyone have experience with these as an accurate plinker? looking to try one. also wonder how they compare to the 10/22. i mean the plain jane, field, basic versions of each. goal is 1" at 50 scoped (low priced one)with good quality ammo-sk,wolf,fed match etc. thanks.

Re: remington 597

I dont have a 22lr 597 but I do have one in 22 mag. shooting a 1 inch group at 50 yds should not be a big deal for the 22lr. I am looking for one of the 597 with the atac camo and threaded barrel

I've got the .22LR and the .22mag versions. both quite accurate rifles out of the box. 1" is no problem. Only problems I have had are with the mags causing FTF, FTE, you name it it flat didn't want to work. I've now upgraded all my mags to GEN 3 (circle 10) mags on the .22LR and GEN 2 on the .22mag and have had no problems whatsoever. Also been lucky with the ProMag 22 round hi cap working flawlessly. No hi caps for the .22 mag are available.

The 10/22 does have moreo aftermarket parts available if that's a consideration but either can be built to shoot really small groups at 50 and 100yds. They are lots of fun and cheap shooting compared to center-fire calibers.

Re: remington 597

I have a Remington 597. I replaced the heavy factory trigger with Volquartsen Target Hammer that I bought from Midway for $40, and added cheap scope. It has no problem shooting 1" at 50 yards with CCI Blazers, and has done much better than that with SK Standard Plus. My kids love to plink with it, and it has been very reliable.

Re: remington 597

I bought the 597 .22lr model that came with a scope. The guy at Dicks sporting goods did a bore sight on it for me. It only took a few rounds to get it sighted in. Once I did, it was grouping 1" or less at 100+yrds. and so far has shot great with every different brand of ammo I have shot.

Re: remington 597

I have a 597 in .17 HMR,it shoots 1" at 100 yards if it's not too windy.I put in the Volquartsen hammer and a Boyd's Tacticool stock. The Boyd's stock is much more comfortable than the factory stock.
