Since I have one of the custom Sako Quad EuroOptic group buy guns on the way for my little ones' Christmas, I have time to overthink scope and mount selection.

I already have an old Leupold Mark 4 M3 fixed 10x44mm with its newly-installed TMR reticle and a LaRue QD LT104 mount, so that price point is unbeatable, but that scope is not illuminated and has only BDC elevation—MOA, not mil/mil. Besides tons of fun, part of my plan is to develop their mil/mil skill sets on a Horus reticle, skill sets transferable to other family heirlooms.

They can already ping 200 yd... er... I mean 182.88 meter... steel using their iron sight Chipmunks, so it seems realistic for them to reach out farther with the Sako Quad's .17HMR barrel to lob tiny lead into IPSC steel.

For those reasons, rather than the Leupold, I am leaning more towards a Horus Blackbird II 1.5-8x24 with illuminated H59 reticle.

Any other suggestions? Scope? Mount?

DIP makes a fine 20 moa rail: http://www.diproductsinc.com/
Burris Signature Zee rings.

Oops. Now I see that it comes with the DIP rail.... sorry.

They are bright and wonderful little ones. My 8-year-old took the school chess championship from the high schoolers and explained Pascal's triangle and Fibonacci numbers to them. I have confidence in their abilities to handle this. Without any hesitation or missteps, they have been playing with the online Horus reticle demo. See "<span style="font-weight: bold">Online Demos: How Horus reticles work</span>" at the very bottom of the page:

Any scope or mount suggestions?

Re: Sako Quad scope and mount suggestions?

I put a Bushnell 3.5-21 on top of mine with the G2DMR reticle. I like it better than the H59 Horus model, but that is an option with the HDMR scope. I mounted mine in a set of "Low" Seekins 34mm rings on the DIP rail that came with my Quad. It's more than enough scope for what I'm shooting (200 yards).

Re: Sako Quad scope and mount suggestions?

I like the USO base, although it requires to receiver to be drilled and tapped. The DIP mount I had was constantly canted because of the way it's mounted.

If you want to spend the big bucks go for a SPUHR mount.

Re: Sako Quad scope and mount suggestions?

Would that not be relevant to the intended targets size,

shooting empty shotshells at 200 meter is challanging if there is not enough X:s in the scope,

and just to adress that, I know more than one person shooting his .17 cal barrel at targets that size.

Re: Sako Quad scope and mount suggestions?

I find the 3-21 really handy for shooting at that range. I normally shoot the little shoot-n-see cover dots at 200 yards, and having the magnification really helps. The scope I had on the rifle previously was a 5-25.

Re: Sako Quad scope and mount suggestions?

I've built my own Quad/Lilja/A5 with DIP and other goodies - mine is an HMR. I use the excellent 30mm Seekins rings and a 3-12 S&B. I must admit that in proper conditions the thing is ridiculously accurate. A good 22 will shoot 1MOA at 100 while a really good HMR will shoot 0.1 to 0.2 MOA. That kind of accuracy will benefit from a bit magnification
