I am ready to bed the TPS steel aloy scope rail on a Remi 700 VSF.
I was planning on using petroleum jelly as a release agent in conjunction with JBweld.
Does any know if there is a an issue with using petroleum jelly aka Vaseline as a release agent?

Thanks

Idol

Re: Scope Rail Bedding

Have done a couple, but I used Acra Glass Gel which comes with a release agent. I think you would be fine using Kiwi natuarl boot polish / wax and jb weld. I would stay away from anything oily for a release agent, it may affect the way your epoxy cures.

Why bed? Because Remington recievers can be all over the place. Try only tightening the front screws and see how high the base sits above the reciever, you may be surprised. Is it necesary? Probably not, but it sure makes the rail fit better and every little bit helps in my opinion.

That's right Base

, I used them interchangeably but I guess I shouldn't, newbie mistake

Re: Scope Rail Bedding

I tried the printer paper test, while having screws tightened on one side only, the sheet goes in rather easily. In fact it doesn't matter which side I tighten the opposing one lets the sheet through. So I am planning on bedding both sides

Re: Scope Rail Bedding

+1 on the Kiwi Neutral shoe polish. The last thing you need when bedding is the uncertainty of if it'll come off. A tin of Kiwi costs bugger all and will last a lifetime of bedding bases and stocks... (for the hobbyist anyway). If you've got your heart set on using Vaseline try a control batch first.

Re: Scope Rail Bedding

Just bedded a Seekins rail on my Remy LTR with JB-weld and used Kiwi neutral as a release agent. No problems getting it off the action. If you're going to do JB-weld I would suggest letting it set up for about 4 hours and then pop it off and clean up your screw holes. Worked great for me.

Re: Scope Rail Bedding

4 hours is important! I tried moving at 3.5, buggered it up. Neutral shoe polish used. Also, bedding both sides will still induce the rail to bend. Bed one side and roll with it. Bedding rear only will add a smidge of elevation.

Re: Scope Rail Bedding

Just remember to check both the front and rear bridge for a gap. On one of my 700 the front needed to be bed. It might of been the base that was designed for the older 700, which I believed to have a lower rear bridge. the base was a EGW so it might of been just the rifle that was off. It is a sps varmint.

Re: Scope Rail Bedding

why bed?

I have seen too many hard to diagnose inconsistencies that likely ended up being a slightly loose scope base - under the scope it is a PITA to check

I bed scope bases with JB weld quik and no release agent - if they need to be removed just hit it with the hot air gun, remove the screws and tap with a mallet, a little more hot air and the residue comes right off
