What magnum-boltface cartridge for long range

I have a rifle with a mag boltface that I'm going to rebarrel. My current tactical rifle is a Defiance/Mcrees in 260. I was thinking of 7mmRemMag, but anyone have any other suggestions? Remember it has to use the mag boltface. Its currently a 270wby sporter on a Mark V action. I'm going to use a varmint countour so I can shoot more than 3 shot strings. The use will be practicing out to 1100 yards. I'll possibly take it hunting if I won't be hiking it up hills.

264 mag? 7 Dakota? Accuracy would trump velocity gains in this decision.

What would you guys do?

7mm Rem Mag is ideal if you want to load high-BC bullets like 180 VLDs.

.300 Win Mag is ideal if you don't handload, or don't want to have to handload.

Smaller than 7mm will be a barrel-burner.

Just a warning on 7 Dakota from a buddy's experience on his F-class rig.

The 7 Dakota has little issues pushing a 180 Berger to 3250fps from a 30" barrel but the Dakota brass sucks. It's very soft and it needed trimming, turning, and prep work to make it so that he wasn't getting odd fliers that would run outside the 10 ring.

Re: What magnum-boltface cartridge for long range

I'm a fan of the 7mm's for ballistics/power upon arrival/tolerable recoil. For some reason I just am not a huge wby cartridge fan for accuracy.

I'm considering the 7wby, but I already load/shoot a 7stw so I have a hotrod 7mm.

I'm trying to keep myself from going 338 due to recoil, but it'll be a heavy barrel on a heavy action and I can brake it. And, I don't have a big boomer currently other than the AR50. In fact the 7STW is my most powerful rifle. 340wby? Anyone have a rifle similar to this and could compare recoil/fatigue to other rifles?

Travis, how long is your wait time currently for a rebarrel?

Sir what OAL are you running to get a 180 to 3030? At what altitude? I am having a 7RM built and all I need now is a reamer...was hoping to get 3000 at sea level with the 180 hybrids.

+1

I'd probably go 300wm myself.

The 7mm Rem mag keeps making more and more sense. 180 bergers at 3000 fps seems hard to beat at a recoil level that shouldn't be bad at all with a barrel with a muzzle around 0.875".

It's certainly a high performance round.

I run a 7/300 WSM (300 WSM necked down to 7mm) and it's throated for a 3.15" OAL on the 180 class bullets. With a 27" tube and a case full of Retumbo I'm getting 3085fps from the 180 Berger Hybrid.

At those kind of barrel lengths the 7 RM should be "shooting soft" for 3000fps performance.
