I took my DPMS 5.56 14.5" carbine rifle apart that Ive had about 5 years. after cleaaning everything up I noticed that the flat sides of the gas key has removed quite a bit of material from where it rides. there where patterns in the bolt carrier bore look good and smooth in my opinion.

My question is, is this normal after at least 10k rounds. Im going to a mid length gas system to see if it helps. any other ideas whats going on.

Thank you.

Re: odd wear on carbine receiver?

Something is going on with webshots as it wont let me upload 2 new pics.

I dont know how to embed them in a post. I will email the two pics to someone if they dont mind posting them for me?

Thank you.

Re: odd wear on carbine receiver?

Go to tinypic.com and upload them there...then come back here and use the UBB code that tinypic gives you for inserting images on a forum/website/etc. which should look something like this (with the asterisks-** removed of course):

Without seeing pics, it is hard to say what is "normal" wear and what might be indicative of a problem. Some wear from the cam pin, as well as from the carrier key, is to be expected and is simply the nature of the beast. Off hand, check to ensure that your carrier key is tightened down properly and free from any movement/play that could be causing excessive wear. Again...pics will help on this one.

Re: odd wear on carbine receiver?

The charging handle does not cover the slick sides of the key. the charging handle is in mint condition.

In the right light you can see a curve where material has worn away from the slick sides of the gas key.

this rifle has over 10k rounds through it. possibly its just its time to be replaced?

Ill try to get another pic posted with the charging handle in it.

Re: odd wear on carbine receiver?

The only thing I can figure is somehow the carrier is tilting side to side and eating up the flat surfaces in the gas key area? I thought this was only a problem with the piston rifles.

Re: odd wear on carbine receiver?

I thought about the carrier key being mis aligned. Its a pretty good bit of material that has been rubbed off. I keep the rifle oiled well and didnt notice the wear untill I took the barrel off as Ive been wanting to re-build this rifle for a while. Another pics should be posted soon

Re: odd wear on carbine receiver?

I can get them. I just hate asking someone else to post them for me. Those were some of the first two parts I looked at and ther is NO abnormal wear on either the gas key or cam pin. I wouls say about .050" + or - has been removed on the worst side.

Im now thinking of replacing that upper and cam pin and gaskey before putting it all back together. It will just take longer than I had hoped.

Re: odd wear on carbine receiver?

I just took my micrometer and neasured the gas key width from front to back and came uo .400" the entire lenght. Now I guess I need to fogure a way to see if it is sitting straight.

the carrier and cam pi seem to be in good condition.

Re: odd wear on carbine receiver?

I think when I get te money I will go ahead and get another upper. Im aslo wondering if the carbine gas system will wear on upper faster than, say a mid length or rifle?

still cant pics to load!!!
