Looking for a little project rifle.
Basically building a "scout" type rifle to keep in my side by side. I spend lots of time in the dezert and up in the mountains and a short ( I will cut the barrel to 16" ), light .308 that I dont mind beating up a bit would come in handy.

Have seen 3 combos locally.
1. Savage Axis
2. Remington 770
3. Remington 700 ADL etc...

Which one has the best trigger out of the box ?

I would Imagine any of these would shoot 1-1.5MOA out to 200 or so which will be plenty good for the intended use.

These combos all come with pretty craptacular scopes but if it gets beat or broken I wont care.

Re: Best of the cheapies ?

just throwin in another option thats in the "cheapie" category..the marlin x7 whether you go with the sporter weight or the varmint barreled vh model. I have the vh model and it's sub-MOA with handloads and right around MOA with factory match stuff

Re: Best of the cheapies ?

Nothing wrong with the ADL. Sportsman's has them in stainless (sporter weight) with a 'craptastic' scope. I dislike the 770 and the Axis personally, although they will work.

Another cheapie to consider would be the Stevens 200 - I've seen them with something resembling a scope from time to time.

I agree with fit66chevy. Also, do you have any other guns in one of these three choices? I'm a believer in familiarity, so that when the gun comes up there's no fumbling for the safety etc. at the time of need.

Of those choices the ADL or now called the Remington Sportsman (available at Sportsmans warehouse, Cabelas and I think Wally-world). No matter what it is still a 700.

Re: Best of the cheapies ?

I personally don't see a need to upgrade the rifle that you are referring to, using it for it's intended tasks. However, should you ever decide to upgrade, my vote would go to the one that you can do practically everything yourself.

The Stevens 200 mentioned above would be a great platform!!

Re: Best of the cheapies ?

I hate to say it, but the Axis that you listed has a weak spot for what you are wanting to do. The stock, behind the trigger, is a weak point for a rifle that will see alot of abuse.

Any of the rifles that you listed will work, but I have my preferences... of course!!

Re: Best of the cheapies ?

I hate to be the guy that suggests something totally different than what you are looking at but.....What about a used Marlin .30-30. Since buying a Marlin Guide gun with 18" barrels I've wanted to buy a .30-30, cut the barrels down and extend the mag tube. Add a scout scope base and you have a fast handling rifle that with the proper loads could get you to 200 yards pretty effectively.

However, if a bolt is what you're looking for. David Petzal just did a piece in the latest issue of Field and Stream about sub $500 hunting rifles. He stated that the Marlin X-7 was the most accurate with the Ruger American coming in a close second.

I know, I hate the guy as well. Just thought that I'd drop that info, the OP can decide if it's a reputable source or not.
