My father, who worked designing equipment and simulators for the military and was an avid firearms collector, passed away a couple of years ago. Among the interesting little pile of 'goodies' in his shop was a .50 BMG barrel, NOS, without a scratch on it. What I'm trying to determine is what its' application was. It's 36" (threads to crown) and uncut. Does anyone here know where I can find more info on these things? Most of what I'm finding on Google are significantly longer. Thanks all!

This thread is USELESS without pictures!

Seriously...a pic or two would be very helpful. If not available, then at least a more detailed description, including any identifying markings anywhere on the barrel would be helpful.

Shooting from the hip (i.e. - pure guess)...it could be a lightweight (smaller profile/contour) aircraft barrel which were commonly 36" in length, stellite lined, used for all sorts of various aircraft applications (fighters, bombers...even some lightweight water-borne crafts like the lightweight motor torpedo boats for one).

Thanks very much for the info! How can I tell if it has a stellite liner? As a follow-up question...what's a stellite liner??
