What kind of paint for a naked Mcrees stock?

Re: What kind of paint for a naked Mcrees stock?

rattle can will work, Take some fine sandpaper or a scotch brite pad to it and degrease the best you can. Could put some clear overtop for a little extra protection.

Re: What kind of paint for a naked Mcrees stock?

I used the dura coat shake n spray kit on a HS stock and let it fry for the recommended time(30ish days) and still had wear on certain edges. I didn't baby it and kind of preferred the beat on look. But that was an expensive route compared to krylon, but cheaper than sending it out to cerakote.

Ultimately, fit and finish are personal preferences, don't be afraid to experiment, you aren't going to hurt that stock!

I used the Krylon camouflage colors. I need to put some matte clear or something over it for a little more protection but its holding up good so far and is super easy to touch up lol.

Alumahyde2 from brownells . Scuff, degrease, and spray. Let cure for 5-7 days and is good to do. Very durable after full cure. After 30 days or so it will hold up to any cleaning solvent including carb and choke and brake cleaner.

Re: What kind of paint for a naked Mcrees stock?

I never had good luck with the Alumahyde 2 paint, to me it took too long to dry, too long to cure, and the durability wasn't that much better than DuraCoat. With the DuraCoat I can paint it in my basement or garage, handle it in 20-30 minutes, and reassemble for use the next day. Most of the issues that I've heard relating to DuraCoat come from insufficient surface prep and/or improper mixture of paint and hardner. The DC on my guns is holding up pretty good and I don't regret going that route one bit.

That being said I'm painting my new B&C stock with Krylon and Rustoleum because it gives me some more flexibility in colors and patterns at a much lower cost. I will be interested to see how well a few coats of matte clear will hold up in the long run but like it was mentioned touching it up shouldn't be too hard.

I used Krylon on my anodized XLR. I scuffed it with green scuff pads, wiped down with denatured alcohol, then sprayed. I used Minwax poly matte clear to add some wear resistance.

Lightly abrade everything with green scouring pad, I also used 200 grit sandpaper (320 wet/dry would be better) and gently relieved a couple edges that were a bit sharp for my taste, and then use a clean rag with acetone or similar and wipe everything down well and let dry completely. As far as the actual painting, I just started that process this evening and have no idea what I am doing so you are on your own. I am using a primer because I had some on hand but I don't know if it is necessary.

Re: What kind of paint for a naked Mcrees stock?

Wal-Mart sells a "self-etching" primer.

Supposedly eliminated the need for roughing up the surface.

Try Aluma-Hyde from brownells.

Re: What kind of paint for a naked Mcrees stock?

I would go to a local body shop supply and buy a red scotch brite pad at least. They sell them singly. Possibly buy a can of sand free. I am not a believer in sand free but I have used it. Or ask what kind of rattle can products they would recommend. If you do not mind reprinting it just hit it with the red pad and some krylon. Should stick good enough strip and repaint as needed.

That is an interesting idea for the forend.

Re: What kind of paint for a naked Mcrees stock?

I wouldn't paint an outhouse with Krylon, it'd lower the value.

Get 3 cans of carb cleaner, wire coat hanger, face mask, and rubber gloves.

That's your prep.

I'd then choose Rustoleum epoxy.

HOSE off the stock with the carb cleaner and paint after letting it air dry.

Finish with flat or satin clear epoxy in thin coats.

Throw empty paint cans in fire and smile as they explode while reassembling rifle...

Re: What kind of paint for a naked Mcrees stock?

Ready to put some color on my raw mcree - anyone have photos of their finished paint job?
I was going to go the brake cleaner / rustoleum route.

Re: What kind of paint for a naked Mcrees stock?

jcvibby,

I krylon'ed one and it didn't hold up well. Look at Brownells. They have air cure cerakote. One bottle will do 3+ stocks. I have a picture in the Let's see McRees thread in photography post.

Good luck with your decision.
