recently picked up a garand & the barrel is pretty well gone,the gun dates 1942 & is all springfield i think except the barrel,no markings by the op rod,all markings under the upper hand guard,was wondering who does good rebarreling & should i just go with something like a criterion or hunt for a 1942 factory barrel?

Wartime barrels in decent shape can cost you more than you paid for the rifle. 42 is relatively early in the production run, numbers-wise, so you are looking for a needle in a haystack.
I'd put a CMP Criterion on it and shoot it. You can always keep an eye out for a correct barrel, but keep your piggy bank well stocked for when one does appear.

I had Shuff parkerize and install a CMP Criterion for me a few years ago. He did a very nice job on it. I dunno what it takes to get a barrel through CMP now, but you might check there. (http://estore.thecmp.org/store/catalog/c...note5=&max=)

Also I would agree that finding a really good barrel with the correct date code would be Very expensive!!

Nothing against a Krieger if you've got the money. However, Criterion is Krieger's OEM brand and their button rifled barrels shoot very well for little more than half the price. A Garand that isn't bedded and tuned won't benefit much, if at all, from a fancier barrel. Buy a Krieger for a custom bolt action.

i agree with the kreiger on a custom action,i have one on my 6ppc bench rifle & it shoot way better than i can!
