We will shoot from the prone, some barricades (nothing outrageous), mostly steel and mostly known distance. We may have a few unknown distance targets, but nothing crazy, so having a spotter is encouraged

I would say majority will be 800 and under. Only a couple past that.

I went over to Ft. Gordon yesterday to get some practice in, and get the lay of the land. Great folks over there.
Beginning March 1st you must register all firearms brought on base. You can do this with the Desk Sargent at the MP office. You must also declare all firearms at the gate starting March 1st. The guys at the gate have already began emplementing the declaration policy. Some make sure you declare when you get to the gate. They gave me all sorts of shit, even though it was not officially policy.
Also, if you are over this way you can go ahead and get your pass for next weekend.
Looking forward to the match. If anyone is comming but not shooting I could sure use a spotter.

To clarify.... You do not have to register your weapons.
You must have a background check done to prove you are can legally possess firearms. The forms you submit to the MPs have a section to list your weapons, unless you live on the base you do not have to fill that section out.
At no place on the forms do you have to give any info on what firearms you own.
This is the post policy to ensure anyone traveling on base with weapons is doing so legally.

Two questions... The only matches I've ever shot in were club level type shoots in which we had enough time to single load and didn't really need to feed from a mag. These matches were also shot exclusively from a prone position, with the exception of the first shot, so loosing brass wasn't really an issue. The PTS match sounds to be much more dynamic, so I'm wondering if 1) having only one 5 round mag will be a problem and 2) if I should be prepared to loose some Lapua brass.

While Ryan can answer your questions for sure, I'll tell you what I have experienced in past pts matches.

I will have forms here to fill out for the background check before and after the match. Its no big deal, same check as a weapons carry permit (NCIC check). Active duty military have a different criteria.....they have to register the weapons they wish to bring on post.

Well, that was fun. Shot OK, nit great. Met quack and knight, plus others. Definitely: learned some stuff.
Was a really fun match today guys ran very smoothly and I learned alot about what not to do lol. Will definitely be back for another run.
3 Major things I learned... get off my ass and practice without the bipod, turn the damm scope down when shooting other then on the bipod... and get rid of the brass used with my old barrel, sticking brass in the chamber = short stages.

That was a great time for sure. Next time someone please remind me to put on some darn sunscreen! LOL. I got very burned on my neck. Was a beautiful day but I'm paying for it.
The match was well organized and fast paced. Not a lot of time screwing around.
All the stages were simple, yet challenging. Rules were straight forward and not overly complicated.
As far as equipment failures, I saw...
Broken firing pin in a LaRue OBR. This rendered the rifle inoperable.
Broken bolt handle on a bolt-action. Didn't see the MFG of that rifle. Anyone got details? I just saw the guy walking around with the rifle in one hand and bolt handle in other.
Broken bolt stop on a Pierce Engineering action. This actually happened on a rifle we had built. Pierce recently "beefed up" their bolt stops and we'll work with the guy to get him a new one. He could still use the rifle but needed to be careful cycling the bolt.
Saw an auto-loader, not sure of MFG, jam a few times. Anyone got details on that?? I saw some problems the shooter had on the barricade stage.
During stage 4 my Nightforce elevation turret stopped clicking as I was adjusting it. Felt like a dead spot in the turret. Ended up the setscrew that holds the turret on (non-Zerostop model with only one screw) had loosened slightly. I didn't figure out what was going on until after the match. I limped things through the last two stages with the help of Joe Harris spotting and walking me up to a 500-yard target. (Thanks Joe!) After that I didn't touch the scope and just used hold overs (NP-R1 reticle) for the rest of the match. Never had the screw come loose, but I'll go re-zero the gun and Locktite the screw.
I didn't take a ton of pictures and tried to limit them to buddies who I knew wouldn't mind. But here are a few...
Our buddy Chris braved the match with his .223 caliber rifle.

What a great time! Lots of nice guns and glass, and even Better People. Ryan/Scott thanks for putting together a fun match that even newbies could enjoy. Congrats to the over-all Match winner. I was in his group and watched him shoot several stages. Calm, Cool, Collected, and great data on his rifle.
Some of the things I took away from the match:
I was the guy in Book's second picture wearing the blue vest.
1) DBM Is a must. Top-loading sucked.
2) A Stock Remington 700 can Shoot. Even with a 20" barrel. There was no target the rifle could not hit with a good driver. All misses were completely my fault.
3) Hold-overs were key. Being able to hold over greatly reduced my shot time (especially since I top loaded). While I only hit two on stage 4 I went eight for ten on stage 5.
4) You must have solid data on your ammo. I had only shot 40 rounds of the Copper Creek 175 SMK prior to the match.
5) Zoom the hell out. Ladd - thanks for that advice. It helped on all stages with multiple engagements
6) Even new guys can have fun while blowing ammo and shooting like crap.
7) Some of the Best People in the world are those in the shooting Community.
The good(ish) - I came in 22nd out of 36 shooters. For a guy with less than 150 rounds through a bolt gun and no magazine I'll call that a win.
The Bad - I fired a total of 42 rounds and had a total of 21 hits for the day 50% hit ratio. We all know what that's called - Half Assed Shooting.

First off, Thank you to Ryan and Scott for putting this match together. Yesterday was a great day for shooting, weather conditions and the group of fellow shooters could not have been any better.
Yesterday's course of fire was great as it touched on several key components of the precision game. I certainly took away several things that I will be working on in preparation for the next event. Becoming more confident in hold overs will be a key focus, it seemed like a lot of yesterday's stages were designed with the hold over in mind. Another thing will be continuing to work on barricades. The tower stage was tough for me and showed that shooting quickly due to time limits will not get hits.
Lastly, I can't wait to see where this match at the Ft. Gordon facility will go. It sounds like Ryan and Scott have many ideas about future growth, and I will gladly be there to see it happen.

The young whipper-snaper shooting the 6.5 Creed (AR Platform) won the over all match with 81 points. I didn't catch his name. Ryan said he wouldn't be posting scores, but I'm sure you could send him a PM. Glad to hear your optic didn't shit the bed. I thought it might have been your turret cap because that happened to another guy in our group. Since I'm a newbie I didn't want to speak out of turn.

No worries, bro. And newbie or not, never be afraid to share thoughts. Input is always welcome! I was surprised my scope issue was the setscrew. Glad that is all it was, but I've never had one work loose like that and it just didn't feel like the screw was the issue.

Sounds like it was a blast. I didnt make it down to observe but am very interested in the next match. I will be checking this section of the forum more often. I am right outside Columbia SC so if any one knows of anything within and hour and a half, feel free to let me know.

This was my first time shooting a match of this style and I had a blast! Thanks to the guys at PTS for putting this match on. Ill be attending many more of yalls events for sure.
Late chiming in, but a big thanks to Ryan and Scott for a fun match. It was nice to get out and shoot a single day match and have a good time. I don't think Ladd and I are going to make the spring Cookeville match, but we will definitely see you guys in the fall!!
