I have a Remington 700 5r in .308 that I chose as my first precision rifle. One of the first things I would like to fix on the rifle is the trigger. It seemed fine dry firing it in the living room, but when I actually fire it at the range I am finding the pull very inconsistent. The pull goes from barely acceptable one shot, to it feeling like I'm pulling a concrete block with my finger. In fact I've stopped the pull a few times to make sure the safety isn't on.

I'm pretty much decided on the CG X-treme Mod 22 2 stage trigger. What I would like opinions on is which model. Is the reversible trigger shoe or the tactical trigger shoe model the way to go for me?

The rifle will mostly be a range gun. Rough ranges sometimes, with walking rough (ish) ground to get to the firing position. and some hunting.

Thoughts?

The reversible/adjustable shoe is nice in that it allows for adjusting it (ergonomically) to your tastes. It is of course, an extra "failure point", though it is a rather simple shaft-clamp design that is a robust design.

Not sure about remingtons, but at least on the winchesters with DBM bottom metal, the reversible/adjustable shoe doesn't stick down far enough out of the stock to be reasonably used, so the tactical shoe is about 99% required.

As for the suitability of the trigger for your use:

Tough call.

It is very difficult to beat the utter simplicity of a pre-Xmark remington trigger, and they rarely fail. Any good gunsmith will be able to tune up a remmy trigger, and get it into the 1.5-2lb zone. You'll have an inexpensive, reliable, crisp and consistent trigger.

Tom of Xtreme shooting products would tell you his triggers have been thoroughly tested in military-contract rifles and they are reliable. I am not here to disagree, but bottom line is the model 22 has a LOT more going on inside. It isn't overly complicated, but has 4 levers, and a lot of adjustments. It took me many hours futzing around with mine to get it just right. So far, it's been perfect.

The key selling points for me:

I've never been able to get a Jewell to be "crisp", and I love a crisp trigger.

Abundant sear engagement - when the rifle is cocked but finger off the trigger, there is .075" sear engagement, which creates an interface that would be very, very difficult to accidentally release. This amount of sear engagement creates a ton of creep, so single stage triggers never have this amount of engagement. In fact, the entire first stage of this trigger IS CREEP. You tune the first stage so that when you hit the wall for the 2nd stage, the sear has merely a wisp of engagement, breaking like a glass rod. If you decide to not take the shot, and remove your finger, the full sear engagement returns.

All that said, I'd never carry any rifle chambered and cocked - particularly over rough terrain.

Thank you for your response and advice Turbo. My 700 does have the X-mark trigger in it. If the pre X-marks are the desirable triggers to have tuned I would have to find one and then send it off.

I wouldn't carry the rifle loaded and cocked either. I included that as a "I might fall on the thing some time" would I break off the adjustable trigger shoe? point :)

Have the same design as the RPA OEM trigger. Can´t really shoot well with anything else now, and won´t be changing it for anything anytime soon. It´s a PITA to set up first (get the combination of first/second pull sear engagement and spring preload just right), but then it´s just velvet smooth.

Ive got the tactical shoe model and its a very nice trigger, if you want the trigger to pull less than 1.5lbs which is what mine came in at, make sure Tom understands you want it lighter, I had to send mine back to get it to the 11oz that I wanted in the first place, if you want a 2 stage id get it.

I have just installed a CG Model 22 in my F-class Remington 700 based rifle. It is the best trigger I have ever used, and I think I have tried them all... I also shoot highpower and I just wish CG made a trigger for my across-the-course spacegun as well. The CG in my Remington replaced a 2 stage Jewell; the CG is clearly superior to the Jewell... pricey, but worth it.

Excellent info all round. I've decided on the fixed trigger shoe for this build. Back ordered an AICS 1.5 from Midway yesterday. Gonna send some e-mails today about the trigger. I'll post some pics when I get some stuff!
