My Remington 700 Long Action. The goal is a 1,000 yard capable target rifle that will be used to hunt everything from varmints to elk. MAYBE something bigger? (Just want to have the power, should I need it.) Accuracy is my main goal but definitely want to be able to put anything down at long ranges if need be.

Debating between .270, .308 or .30-06. I am EXTREMELY indecisive here. Must make up my mind before ordering anything!!

Thinking about a Hart/ Kreeger barrel, HS Precision (which I have) or McMillan Stock, Timmney Trigger, Badger detachable magazine, Badger or Nightforce rail and rings. Nightforce or similar quality scope.

The action still needs to be trued/ blueprinted!!!

I would like everyones suggestions on the following...
1. Caliber?
2. Barrel make, length, and twist rate?
3. Who should true my action... (Thinking GA Precision)??
4. Basically... I would LOVE for you guys to explain how you would build this rifle if it were you! But with only one of the three ammo choices listed. Have fun!

1: 30-06, 280 or 280 AI if your keeping the same bolt face (I am assuming its a .473 from the calibers you listed), all would be great 1000 yard target and hunting calibers.
2: A:any well known cut rifled maker. B:24-26" B-2:remington varmint contour or maybe a heavy bull sporter if weight is a concern and you dont plan to blaze away at the range. C: 1:10 for 30 cal bore and 1:9 for the two 7mm bores

I'd have Carl Ramey spin up a .30-06 barrel 22" long, from any quality blank. It, to me is the most versatile cartridge in terms of trying to accomplish everything, without giving up too much of anything.

300 win mag 1:10 shoot 200+gr bullets 26in bbl with muzzle break, get it trued and blueprinted by GA, The stock is your choice what fits you best but I like eliseo chassis, also get nf ATACR

Can't go wrong there. Can grab a box of '06 from any shelf in the US, and when you roll your own, AI adds what, like 200 or 250 fps in a 24" bbl? Some people rag on fire-forming brass, but it's plenty good for hunting practice. Then you'll enjoy target practice when you see your AI groups. Easier on brass too right? If you can't go AI, go .30-06 at least. Great round with lots of reload potential!

Rings - I'd like to add, just installed a set of USO low rings; I'm VERY impressed with the quality and the fit. There's almost NO play in their slot that fits inside the pic-rail. The pair is machined so they don't need lapping, and the mechanical parts are amazing quality. I've never used Badger, and I know they are the tits, but I am now a USO whore....

Rail - I got a TPS 20 MOA rail, alloy steel, with recoil lug. I was very impressed with it's quality as well. No need to bed as the fit was perfect, and it's built like a brick shithouse. Badger is probably better cut and machined....

Truing - +1 on the Long Rifles true up. They have added so much first class machinery to offer insane turn around times. That's where I'd send mine if I was going to re-barrel. I've got a lot of shooting to do first...

Stock - While your action is at LRI, have them machine a 1-piece aluminum bedding "chassis" for your HS stock. It's $200, but it's FAR superior to any other type of bedding. They machine it to your action, and it's far more than just a V-Block. It cradles the action into the block. Absolutely genious! Or, sell your HS and buy a McMillian and send it to LRI...

Barrel - I'd probably go with Bartlein, but that's just me. Barrel twist; depends on how heavy your pills will be. If you want 208 A-Max loads, and won't shoot anything lighter than 168, I'd go faster. Someone smarter than me can give you twist ratio.

280ai I had the same receiver and I took it to phoenix custom rifles for my build. Also went with a brux #5 and mcmillian htg stock. I am real happy with the way it looks right now. Hopefully in a couple weeks I can tell you how it shoots.

I look at a rifle that will be an ALL PURPOSE, gophers to elk tool as a huge Compromise. I don't like to compromise.

You end up with an overly heavy hunting rifle...or a too light LR rig. I'd build TWO not one.

I am building a 30-06 like this:
MCS-T
BDL bottom metal PT&G Alloy
BDL box and follower factory
24" Oby 5r .298 bore barrel
Tight Match chamber
Removable break of some sorts
USO 3.2-17x Ergo Older scope

Killer hunting/target gun. Its BY NO means a comp rifle. Its my version of the M40A1 improved with NO truck axle.

Build it in 30-06. Plenty of factory ammo available. Large selection of 30 cal bullets if you want to reload. Has plenty of horsepower to take advantage of higher BC 30 cal bullets. Enough hard hitting terminal energy for any size North American game.

Buy yourself a manners hunter mini chassis; it's lightweight and requires no bedding. There are several styles available, go with what suits you. I would go BDL style and top load. LHS flush cups or front and bottom studs depending on your sling.
Get a 1/11-1/10 twist 308 barrel, rem varmint contour (get flutes if you want to save weight). 22-24"
Vais muzzle brake
Tactical bolt knob
Two piece NF long action 20 MOA base set if you run a BDL to ease of top feeding
Tune the rem trigger or get a timney (if you get a timney, have manners cut the stock for it)
Parkerize/charcoal/matte black cerakote
Send it to Long Rifles Inc for the Group Buy

Do you plan to pack/carry this rifle far? Have a weight limit you are trying to stay under? For an all around caliber that has lots of upside I'd go with the 30/06 of those. Can load it up or down depending on the need.

I say 280 or 280 AI.
24" barrel
Mcmillian stock HTG
#5 contour Hart 8.5-9 twist
This will be an Ideal hunting rig. Can't really have both in one rifle.
Also I would go with PTG BDL hinged floor plate.
You'll thank me if you go stomping after elk.

i would definitely go with a 30-06, maybe the AI as suggested as ive never researched the AI version. 1:10 varmint contour barrel in a 700P takeoff stock. 6-24x Viper PST with a seekins 20MOA base and rings.

high end build would have a Razor HD or NXS scope, manners t2a, and maybe a m24 contour barrel with deep flutes.

338 Edge chambering (of the one you listed. 30-06. 308 / 270 won't have the umph for a clean kill od an elk at 1000)

Actually, I am building this rifle...

Keep in mind - a serious target rifle gets really heavy, and is not suited to being a good hunting rifle. Ya really kinda need to choose one or the other.

Again you can't have both. A 338 edge can't be built on a standard action and is beyond the recoil tolerance of 99.9% of shooters. Also the cost of that round would be much higher. The weight would also further limit it. A 1000 yard shot at an elk is totally irresponsible. Only the best shooter could make that shot under the most ideal conditions. Hunting game is very different then all hits count sniping. Also killing ain't the same as hunting.

As I understand it, a 338 Edge can be built on a standard action.

And of course, any caliber that big needs a highly functional brake, which can tame it down to a 308's recoil.


I'll leave the hunting issue to others. All I hunt is paper and steel.

Based on a.404 Jeffrey it ain't a standard action case. It is a necked up Remington 300 ultra magnum. Something about that "Ultra Magnum" with a 2.85 case length just don't seem standard to me. The op has a picture of a Remington long action. And a 338 won't fit.

BigCheese, I had very similar requirements to you and ended up building my rifle into the following:

- Remington 700 SA RH blueprinted/trued by SWP
- Krieger SS cut rifled barrel, 22” finished length, Heavy Palma contour, 1:9 twist, target crown (twist rate chosen due to my extreme altitude which comes with a very low barometric pressure)
- Chambered for .260 Remington with a PT&G Match Reamer
- HS Precision 5R stock with full length aluminum bedding block
- Atlas Worx bottom metal reworked by SWP
- Badger Ordnance oversized recoil lug (0.312” thick)
- Timney 510 adjustable trigger with safety adjusted to 3 lbs
- Barreled action bedded into stock by SWP
- SWP heavy knurl bolt knob
- Barreled action was media blasted to a matte finish and finished with black Cerakote
- EGW 0 MOA base bedded onto action by SWP
- TPS TSR steel 30mm rings (super low, 0.820”)
- Bushnell Elite Tactical 6500 3-12x44mm, 30mm tube, mil/mil, FFP, illuminated reticle (ET3124F)
- AICS mags (5 and 10 round)

It weighs 12 lbs, 4 oz with 5 rounds in the mag
