I'm going to Great Falls to see my brother and newborn niece. I've seen prairie dogs on the Air Force base there, but don't think they'd appreciate lining up the rifles on base. Does anyone know of some good public spots for prairie dogs near Great Falls so I can get my wife and son out shooting?
Thanks in advance,
Rod

Glad to see you're getting a little bit of time off. Hope you find a good spot and have a good time. Tyler Kemp put up a photo session of a dog hunt somewhere in KS...you should check that out if you have a chance. What are you using, your 223 or your 260?

Those are not PD's on Malmstrom AFB, they are Gophers....the PD's cousin. I believe related more to the ground squirrels.

You are two months late for optimal Gopher shooting. Currently too hot and dry. In the mid 90's today with 20+ mph winds. When it's hot like this they simply stay down in their cool burrows. And many fields are overgrown so tough to see them.

I would call the Fish Wildlife and Parks Office at Giant Springs. Ask to speak to a local Warden if possible. If none available let them know you are in the area for X amount of time and would like to shoot some gophers/PD's. Ask if one of the Wardens would return a call.

Another thought is going to Havre for PD's. Many of them wiped out a few years back by plague..so don't handle any....but they are bouncing back. Ask the FWP folks for any Ranchers up in that area who may still allow hunters on.

Go to Scheels the overpriced Cabellas'ish sporting goods store on 10th South. Ask the Salesman in the gun area WHERE to go.

I'm down south near Craig. Access is tough in my area and currently over grown anyway. Plus I'm currently in NJ, not home until thursday. I have internet tonight and tomorrow, then travelling back Wednesday.

If you have any other questions.... [email protected]

Good Luck.
