    This happens to be one of my favorite movies of all time. It's a real shame it hasn't made a blu-ray transfer yet. Though it catches some flak from critics and moviegoers alike. I remember watching it when i was young and just thought it was great. A lot of people seem to dislike Michael Douglas' Character Remington but i think he's awesome. Over the top and not part of the actual story? Sure but it fit the movie well. Such a great movie IMO and has a very powerful soundtrack.

    Always made me want a Lee Speed Sporter if able to find one. Funny thing is dad used to own a .303 british so i have tons of brass for it. Beautiful rifle.

    Also love this movie... If you get a chance, as Mute says, read Patterson's book "The Man Eaters of Tsavo" from about 1907, it's a fun read. He was the railroad engineer played by Val Kilmer. As I recall, the movie narrator at the beginning says "Everything about this is true." Not so much. But it is based on real events.

    The real lions from Tsavo are stuffed and on display in the Chicago Natural History museum....

    That movie always made me want to own a double rifle... And did inspire me to read a lot of Capstick and Rourke!!

    +1 for both the movie and the book. Before Kilmer got fat and Douglas got old! Happens to the best of us!

    Funny how the real lions of Tsavo are the kind that don't have manes like the ones in the movie. They sure raised some hell either way.

    I couldn't agree more. The book was fantastic but I found the movie to be a bit preachy and full of PC B.S. It was still entertaining and better than 90% of the stuff that Hollyweird puts out though.

    Lots of people panned Spartan, but I thought it was great. Sydney Lumet doesn't do many movies (mainly a stage director), but the ones he has done are first rate. Spartan was just nicely put together. If I remember right, the technical advisor on that flick was Eric Haney. Movie had some neat little details like the sign at the camp gate early on which read "Mackall Construction" in tribute to Camp Mackall.

    At one point, someone was making the "Spartan bags" that Kilmer carried. That bag was made for the movie and a bunch of people wanted them and wanted to order them.

    Kilmer was also first rate in HEAT... then again, everyone was!

    Actually, David Mamet wrote and directed Spartan. Sydney Lumet directed and David Mamet wrote The Verdict, my all time favorite courtroom drama.

    . I have the book, great read, JH Patterson IIRC. In somewhat reverse of what you stated, I started with Capstick, I have nearly all of them. Went to Taylor & have an original copy of "Pondoro:Last of the Ivory hunters". From there to Patterson & Rourke. I do believe Capstick & Rourke are above the rest, damn good writers, those two.


    PS- the movie is pretty dern good :)

    You are of course correct... my mistake. I get my artsy directors mixed up all the time. Mamet was first rate. Thanks for the correction!!!

    Awesome movie! I have been in lion country and when they would roar at night and fight, it would scar the hell out of me. It's hard to sleep in the bush when the lions are out there, you would be surprised how loud the roar can be!
