How to deal with lot variations?

For match grade 22lr ammo I have always had this question- how do the serious benchresters and hyper-accuracy guys buy ammo? My understanding is everyone needs to test a series "lots" and types. Then buy a shit-ton of whatever works in your rifle/barrel. Sounds good, but how do you buy a brick to test and then turn around and get a case of the same lot? Do people buy a case of a lot in hopes it works and if not, sell/trade it?

Thanks in advance for satiating my curiosity!

Testing facilities exist, run by manufacturers, for those serious about accuracy.

Interesting article that definitely does answer how the Eley sponsored team can find what works best for them! That would be amazing if I could test different lots and then buy a case or two of it right there. Of course I'd need to buy a kickass 22 rifle.... hmm... one more reason for one more rifle...

How about non-sponsored shooters? How do yall do it?

Places like Champion Shooters Supply sell by the box. So, you can call them, get recommendations on what is likely to work in a rifle like yours and get 30 boxes from 30 lots. Shoot until you find the one that is best and order as much as you think you want and can afford. Bruno does this as well. Likely others. Good luck.

Thanks guys, that answers it. I was not aware that regular joes could use those facilities or request specific lots from online retailers. Those options really open the doors for the wannabes like myself!

I go to champions shooters supply and buy a box of every lot they have of an ammo I am interested in or, more often, several ammos that I have had luck with in the past. I test them out and buy what works best for the price. Usually this is some combination of Eley match, Laupa Center X, and Eley sport. Obviously these represent different price and performance categories. Right now all I can reliably get is Eley Match. Center X is dicey and Eley sport might as well not exist. Frankly, at the new price I wouldn't buy it anymore anyway. It was a great value at $27 a brick but it is not worth $35. That is too near the $40 a brick that 711b runs and 711b reliably outperforms it. Of course all this moot as both are always out of stock.
