Optimum Barrel Length 6.5 Creedmoor?

Gent's,

What's the consensus for the optimum barrel length for the 6.5 Creedmoor...in terms of extracting the highest velocity, downrange performance to include distance & energy? Also, at what range does it typically go transonic (I know several variables are involved - elevation, humidity, etc.)...but, average more or, less?

Thanks in advance!

I have both a 24" and a 26" and out of the same load/bullet the 60 +/- fps more I get out of the 26" is well worth the 2" to me. The 2" is hardy noticeable once its on the gun. Now if you plan on throwing an 8-10" can on it, then that could be a whole new story, but in the end i would still cut mine to 26".

The round was developed around a 28" barrel. That said a 24-26" works well but I would recommend a 26" especially if running factory ammo so you can get the most out of it.

Transonic will depend on velocity as well as other variables so just run your numbers on JBM Ballistics to find out where it will for you.

Hey Rob01;
What about gas gun ?
its 22'' long enough to utilize this caliber?
IDK maybe using a light projectile (120-130gr)?
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family;)

I don't run it in a gas gun but my team mates who did used the 120/123 grn bullets. Up to 130s should work too. 140s will work but you won't get as much velocity as a bolt gun obviously. Run the numbers on a ballistics program and see which would work out best for you and your intended uses.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours as well.

Yes I'm reviving this old thread

On a bolt gun, proof carbon barrel, ruckus action. After 8 years has the technology, load development, and actions changed this original thoughts of the best barrel length being 26 inches? I was personally looking at 24 inches.

26" was never said to be the "best". If you want more velocity you can go longer 28", 30" etc but if you wanted handier for a shorter range hunter then you can go 20". "Best" comes down to what the shooter needs out of the rifle. What are you doing with the rifle?

I think that unless you have a compelling reason to go with a shorter barrel (i.e. wanting to mount a suppressor), go with the longest barrel you think reasonable and get some free velocity.

I wanna go 28'' of untapered barrel next time my last one was 26'' and mtu while I liked it I still think getting a little more speed would be nicer and the extra weight sounds pretty nice to boot , as long as I don't need to use more powder I am happy with what i use now .
