AICS Chassis Questions

Hi all, I'm new to bolt action rifles in general, looking into get one and different AICS models are really confusing... :)

1. If I get the AICS AX chassis for 308Win, I can get a barreled short action in 6.5CM, drop into the stock, and cartridges should fit in the magazine it came with. Correct?

2. If I get the same chassis but for 300WM, which accepts long action. Can I get a 308Win/6.5CM in long action receiver for the chassis? Will the long action size magazine work for 308Win/6.5CM cartridges?

What I'm thinking is that I want to run 6.5CM now, but also want to be future proof in the future in case I want to use any long action length cartridges.

Thanks!

Stolen from an old thread
AT: short action, 308 bolt face, bonded AT style chassis, standard AT/AX/AW barrels
AX 308: short action, 308 bolt face (same as AT), bonded AX style chassis, standard AT/AX/AW barrels
AXMC: long action, 308 or magnum bolt faces, bonded AX style chassis, barrels have larger tenon, not compatible with AT/AX/AW barrels

I remember reading that the ax308 isnt advertised as a multi caliber system, just a multi barrel system and that the axmc was the actual multicaliber system. You can still swap barrels in the ax308 but there was something about not having a small firing pin or something to run br/dashers (and now lapuea creed brass) thus the technicality of multicaliber-nes.

If you want long action your only choice is the axmc and you can get a 308/6.5 barrel for it.

Ill let someone else parse the differences and technicalities of the multiness who has a more detailed knowledge of it.

If you get an AICS chassis to fit a short action then you can only mount short actions and short action calibers due to magazine length. If you were to buy an AICS chassis to fit a long action you can only mount a long action but that long action can be barreled in whatever caliber you desire. Might have to fiddle a little bit with lips on the magazine if you were to mount a .308 or 6.5 CM barreled action in a long action.

Thanks all, talked to Euro Optics and they pointed me to this: http://www.eurooptic.com/ai-aluminum-mag-adapter-black-27268-bl.aspx

It's a magazine adapter for using the 308win magazine in stock for long action receiver.

Now the question becomes, should I buy the long action stock for "future proof", or just get the short action because I plan to run 6.5CM because you know, by the time I want to upgrade caliber, I will most likely just get another stock.

If you want true future proof, you would be better off saving up and buying a true AI system. Keep your eye on the PX and you might find a decent deal. Then you can switch barrels without the need to buy a second action, a second trigger, a second optic, and another AI chassis...

Might be silly but are the action screws the same spacing on a short action and long action?.... sure the magazine well is bigger so you may have to tweak a magazine to suit .308's, but if the action screws are a different spacing then thats something to check if you can drill an extra hole somewhere if required. When I modified my AI AX chassis rem700 s/a to suit my tikka I was able to drill a new front action screw in existing material.

No, screw spacing grows in proportion to the extra length of the action.

That's what I thought, and was posing the question to derek/OP, the way I understood he's wanting 1 chassis (long action AI AX) to suit both a long and short action caliber/rifle. Sure Euro sells the magazine well insert - not sure if it's meant for the Chassis though - might only work with the AXMC rifles (they don't have the pocket milled in the side of the magazine area like the chassis do). But if the screw spacing is different then that's a pretty obvious problem right up front - unless there is the ability to add the different action screw hole for the SA REM700 footprint.

I'd save yourself some headache and just snag up an AXMC, they pop up in the PX pretty discounted sometimes and you can have one rifle to rule them all. I rifle to find them, 1 rifle to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

I think you can get a long action receiver w/ 308 bolt & barrel, it's gonna be a custom job of course, but possible. Looking at the amount of work/parts involved, I think I won't do it. Might get a short action AX chassis for now and just use it for short action length caliber, or maybe like suggested just get an AXMC.

Thanks all1
