Witnesses describe scene of military plane crash: 'One of the worst fires you can imagine'

KARMA ALLEN,Good Morning America 1 hour 55 minutes ago

At least 16 people were killed on Monday after a military plane crashed into a soybean field in Mississippi’s Delta region, authorities said.

The plane, a Marine Corps KC-130 aircraft, crashed Monday at around 4 p.m. in Leflore County, Mississippi -- about 85 miles north of Jackson -- near Highway 82, according to authorities.

Investigators told ABC’s Mississippi affiliate WLOX that debris was found on both sides of the highway, which they said could indicate that the plane may have exploded mid-air.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud “crackling” noise at the time of the crash, which filled the air with thick clouds of black smoke and spread debris for miles.

Andy Jones, a local farmer, said he heard a loud boom looked and up to find the aircraft spinning downward.

"You looked up and you saw the plane twirling around," Jones told The Associated Press late Monday. "It was spinning down."

Jones said he rushed over to the crash site, but the fires were burning too intensely for him to get close. He said the impact of the crash nearly flattened the aircraft and that wreckage was sprawled all across Highway 82, which is located more than a mile away from the crash site.

"It was one of the worst fires you can imagine," Jones said. "Beans are about waist-high, and there wasn't much sticking out above the beans."

Chris Nissen, who shot video of the aftermath, said there were lots of small explosions after the initial crash.

“When it crashed, man, that's all you hear first was all the ammunition blowing up,” Nissen told reporters Monday.

The Marine Corps said the flight originated from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C.

"The identities of the service members whose lives were lost in this tragic accident are being withheld to allow time for their loved ones to be notified," the Marine Corps said in a statement early Tuesday. "The cause of the crash is unknown at this time; the incident is under investigation."

A Mississippi state trooper on the scene told reporters that the plane had been loaded with ammunition.

"There's a lot of ammo in the plane,” the state trooper said, according to WLOX. “That's why we are keeping so far back. We just don't know what it'll do. It burns a bit then goes out, burns a little more, then dies down."

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant asked the public to pray for those who were impacted by the incident.

“Please join [my wife] Deborah and me in praying for those hurting after this tragedy,” Bryant wrote in a Facebook post. “Our men and women in uniform risk themselves every day to secure our freedom.”

Nothing at all about this post to 'like.'

That said, thanks for posting. I watched a couple of stories about this and will extend my heartfelt sorrow to the families of the fallen.

Not sure what happened here, except that the odds sometimes catch up with people who are aloft for a living.

They are all assured their place in our hearts and their heaven...

In greatest respect for our lost Marines and sailors,

According to the news (for what it's worth) they fly with some personal weapons. Survival gear? Or Marines are riflemen first, refuelers second.

That said, battery backups and iPods explode, too, when exposed to fire. It sounds like the aircraft had a structural failure. If things were 'cooking off' on the ground, it does not mean it was loaded with ordnance.

Seems more likely that a decade of low budgets and deferred maintenance is more likely to have caused this tragedy than some kind of weapons malfunction. I am sure the inquiry will be detailed.

That was my point. The trooper said it WAS. I highly doubt it.

It was ammo cooking off that was being transported as cargo along with seven MARSOC Raiders on board the craft, KC-130 are still a '130 that hauls ass and trash too.

Sad, gotta wonder if we have just plain wore out our basic equipment. Very sad.

Something definitely went seriously sideways for a bird to tear up at 20k ft on cruise. From what I've heard and read, they're looking at the cargo along with a multitude of other things, but it's also no secret sequestration has done a major number on aircraft maintenance. Mattis tore into Congress last month about it, and it's plain shameful that EVERYONE in Washington has allowed it to continue.

That sucks even more. Very tight community to lose so many in a crash.

    Thanks for that update.

It's hitting the squadron's area hard as well, it was a reserve plane out of Newburgh, NY, just a stone's throw from the city. And this: [h=1]At Crash Site of Marine Corps Plane, Bodies ‘Were Everywhere’[/h] is what the NYT runs with for their headline on the article, knowing damn good and fucking well that spouses, parents, and kids, who know it was their loved one on that plane, were going to be reading this in the paper and online while just after the CACO team leaves their living room.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/11/us/marines-plane-crash.html

These three mother fuckers, these three right fucking here: ELLEN ANN FENTRESS, RICHARD PÉREZ-PEÑA and DAVE PHILIPPS

I seriously hope their family gets news of their demise in the same exact manner and get that horrific visualization and mental trauma. They have no fucking soul or even a shred of common fucking decency as a fucking human. Fucking New Yorkers, mother fuckers...

Yes, I'm fucking pissed. I know the Times are despicable, but THIS is the very definition of deplorable. All for a buck, NYT has turned to click bait at the expense of widow's mental states.

I heard that the FBI has also opened a case due to "evidence being removed from the crash site". Why do I think some weapons went missing?...

From the sound of it Id think that anything in that airplane was pretty well destroyed on impact.

Having been around a similar incident, I can tell you, weapons can survive a lot, that the human body can't. Besides, even if the barrel and stock are bent/shattered, there's a good chance the (auto enabled) receiver did survive intact, especially if they were racked or cased. Hence my suspicions...
