Anyone know if a Howa 1500 bolt body can be fluted? I don't see any examples in my search, and I know the bolt bodies have those extra holes for pressure relief. Does this prevent them from being fluted?

    Thanks

    One piece bolts are difficult.
    Likely can't be done.
I disagree. If they can be fixtured on a lathe to thread the bolt handle for a big knob, they can be fixtured in a vertical mill to flute the body.

In fact, the jig would be easier to design and make. The gas vent holes are a non issue.

I don't know who did this one but it's already done

    That is some beautiful work.
Also as FYI, the weatherby vanguards (essentially a Howa 1500) come from factory with straight flutes. Or at least mine did a few years back.

    SH Fellers,

I got my Howa Mini bolt back from Paul at Pro Precision Rifles and thought I'd share some pictures. He was able to Vortex-flute my bolt, although due to the smaller diameter of the mini-action (compared to a short-action) he did have to build a new fixture. Also, due to the hardness of Howa bolts, he only offers Vortex fluting at this time.

What you see is how it came. That model is the Pro-Varmint, and they offer the adjustable cheek as an option.

I'm guessing the cross-bolts were added by Boyd's due to the specific inlet. My At-One from Boyd's has them too, and that is a Tikka inlet. However my CZ 455 Boyd's stock (Pro Varmint) does not have them.

Or maybe the cross-bolts are for centerfire rifles only . . .

Nice looking rifle, that Boyd's stock actually looks very clean. I am considering picking one up to build a savage or CZ 22 trainer on. Which wood and finish did you go with, is that their "unfinished" option?

The one in the picture is called their "pepper" color laminate. It is a grey/black pattern, and has a matte top coat. It is certainly not unfinished.

Gotcha thanks. Again, that's a damn fine looking rifle.

We've done a few hundred of them now as part of our little special. You guys seriously came out of the wood work on that deal, lol. In/out in just a few days. Visit the store and it will walk you through the process.
