I have just been gifted 2 Remington 700s from a relative. One is a milspec 5r and the other is a Sendero sfii. Both are new never fired both are threaded and capped, the 5r is 24” and the Sendero is 26. This rifle will serve time on the range and in the field for all different animals. What is your general thought about which rifle is better for an all around rifle.

I’ve also considered selling both rifles and picking up a VSSF in 25/06 for an all around rifle. Just throwing thoughts out.

Would you’re relative be ok with you hocking them to fund something else? Just curious.

The 300 seems like a better all arounder than a 25/06 to me. If you sell them both, why buy another sendero? Lots of great guns with exactly the features you may want, or a custom.

I recently let go of my gen 1 5r, it was amazing. My .308 is better for my current applications. If it were me, I'd sell the sendero, and then buy a nice stock or chassis for the 5r.
I think that if you can honestly answer a few questions, you'll figure it out.

1. What are your major applications?
2. What are your requirements in terms of build materials?
3. Do you need the 2 extra inches? We're talking barrells, not "hardware" lol. Seriously though, will your goals require the extra length?
4. Are they wearing factory stocks?

If you want a 300wm in the style of a sendero or 5r then i suggest selling one of them and buying a Howa 300wm barreled action from Brownells--they make a heavy barreled and threaded version ($500), and buy a Bell and Carlson stock ($275). The Howa machining quality is much better than the Remingtons.

Would your relative mind being my relative?

Lol no joke. Then again... mom got me a badger efr and some kit to start prs for christmas... gotta love still being a "kid"

back to the op though
I'd say you'd be fine with either, or selling. There are too many good choices out there to list. I use Texas gun trader, and if I pick something up and dont like it, I trade it for something else pretty quick. Seen pretty fair numbers for both of those rifles in these parts, so realistically you could go any number of routes. Hell, you could even sell both and turn that into a sizable chunk of cash towards a custom build. Just a thought.

I appreciate the feedback, I had a 5r 308 years ago and it was a laser. I think I’ll let go of the Sendero and keep the 5r. I’ll probably pull the BA and Cerakote it OD for kicks.

I'd keep whichever one shoots the best. If they both shoot well then I'd prefer the 5R over the Sendero for the ability to shorten it later if desired without looking stupid because of the flutes.

I agree with others that the 300WM is a better option for an all around rifle than 25-06. Also a lot better ammo availability.

i purchased Gen2 5r 300Wm a few years ago. the stock was not free floating so i ended up spending a ton of money to replace the trigger and drop it into a AICS stock.. unless you are a speed demon when it comes to velocity i would stick with the 24" barrel. i've been very happy with my groups with my ultra 7 supressor... i will add the barrel is fluted from the factory

I have a Rem 700 XCR Tactical 300WM that has a 26" barrel. It s a fine rifle but for range use wish that it had a little more weight in the barrel. As a range/hunting rifle it would be a great all around rifle IMO. If I had to buy another 300wm I'd look at the 5R Gen 1

I wouldn't sell either, but with the 300WM, I might be thinking about recoil. I would also be thinking about honoring my relative's wishes and putting them to some use before I did any thinking about selling them. Good thing, the 300WM is a popular cartridge, so they would probably sell OK if they went on the block. Not so much with the .25-06. First, it still kicks. Ammunition may not be as easily acquired, and there are game size limitations that definitely don't occur with the .300WM. I have never seen anyone owning a .25-06 besides myself and I no longer do.

Stick with the two, their cost was perfect, and they will probably get some good use in their intended applications. They wouldn't be my most frequently used guns (recoil-wise I'm a wuss), but they will definitely come into their own for big game.

Save your shekels, and buy a Savage 10/110 Predator Hunter Max 1, chambered for either 260 or 6.5CM. It will be a lot of rifle for a reasonable pricetag, and is something I wouldn't mind either carrying in the field, or shooting 40 rounds through off the bench. My son-In-Law harvested 3 NY Whitetails with one this season.
