This is a summary of my experience with a barrel manufacturer doing the chambering and other work on my rifle. This does not reflect all barrel makers but is just my experience. I don't want to say any names as I still believe their barrels are outstanding.

A few years ago, I had my FN SPR re-barreled from .308 to .260 Rem. I was so excited as this was my first "custom" rifle experience. I picked what I believe is the finest cut rifling barrel maker in the country to cut the barrel, chamber it, thread and install muzzle brake, and bed the action. I wanted one place to do it all. I figured if their barrels are world class, then so is their gunsmithing abilities.

We will start with the muzzle brake. I chose a brake that had to be timed and installed by a smith just because I like the way they look. This was the result.

Notice how it is clocked counter clock wise? I know some brakes benefit from this if there are top ports but this one has none and I see no benefit to doing so.

Next we go to the threads. They look pretty rough in my opinion. They function so that's what matters but just seems sloppy.

And then the chamber. Notice the ring in the shoulder? I was told by Jim See that this is due to a chip that got in the chamber while the reamer was being run through. Again, functional but sloppy.

In conclusion, I think I will be keeping barrel making and chambering separate. The rifle shoots great so mission accomplished. Just a little disappointing.

Everything you pointed out is cosmetic and not even the kind of cosmetic flaws that anyone could even notice. It wouldn't give me the warm and fuzzy feeling to see that stuff either. I'm glad it shoots good. That is what matters most.

The problem is a lack of pride in workmanship and a total disregard for producing a high quality product but one that is good enough. This is the experience that I have with almost everything that I have professionally done including house remodels, work on my vehicles, boats, and pretty much everything else I have done PROFESSIONALLY. This is one of the reasons that I now attempt to learn and do everything. My work is almost as good and sometimes better. I am currently working on my Gunsmithing skills including barrel work on a lathe. I am OCD enough that it really bothers me how our PROS just don’t give enough of a shit to do quality work. Sign of the times I guess.

Same experience here (but worse) with a top tier barrel maker doing a re-barrel job. Willing to bet it's the same one...

Chamber was overly tight (like it was cut with a dull/under-sized/over-used reamer). Couldn't get anywhere remotely near reasonable velocities without bolt-click on extraction. No other pressure signs... Sent it back to them for inspection/repair. They said they couldn't find anything wrong with it and that they tested it with factory ammo and all was well... funny thing is when it came back the 'bolt click' issue was gone. Never did it again, hmmm.

Also asked before starting the job if they could chamber/freebore it to shoot a specific bullet magazine-fed. They say no-problem... Get it back and when I seat that specific bullet at max magazine length, it's jumping over 0.100" to the lands!!!! Never has been much of a shooter with that bullet or any other tried in it. Switched scopes a couple times, thinking that was the problem, but have the same issues. At this point it sits in the safe.

Yeah it was the same one. Last time I ever do the whole works there again. Kind of turned off from even getting barrels from them after this.

Am I the only one who is curious to know who did this work for you? I mean, I understand you not wanting to slander a company based on this one example of work, but at the same time... If you are unhappy with the work, I see no reason why you can't post your experiences and share your opinion truthfully.

You're right. Bartlein was where I had the work done. I delivered the rifle myself and got to see the facility and got a few t shirts out of the trip. It was a cool experience to be able to do that and the staff was very friendly. I mean nothing against Bartlein I think they make some great stuff.

Nooooo, I was hoping it wouldn't be Bartlein lol! It is truly disappointing when you are expecting a top notch product, and you see things that indicate a lack of workmanship pride. That is definitely a bummer, but hopefully it can be some advice to someone in the future to consider.

Did you contact them to see if they would make it right?
It's worth a shot. Just been a while since the work was done. I have been dealing with it, I think it shoots great. Just tired of hearing "nice gun but whys your muzzle brake crooked?" at the range. I don't really know what can be done at this point besides a complete redo.

Let me understand this.
a. had an issue with the work.
b. several years ago.
c. Never complained to the original smith.
d. Comes on here and complains. Others say only cosmetic (I agree)
e. Then mentions the company.
f. Then says maybe I see what they say.
g. Should of contacted smith before posting here.

I respect your opinion. Sorry for sharing.

Don't name names, gets you...

Wish I would have read something like this before I wrongly ASS-umed that a quality barrel maker would do quality gunsmithing work. Expensive lesson.
