I recently moved to Manhattan from WI after graduating college for work. The job is great, but my 6.5 creed, 223, sporting clays gun, etc. are obviously all back home. I've been hunting and shooting competitvely since I was a kid and I need it back in my life. I've been able to find indoor rifle/pistol ranges so far, but it just isn't the same. Are there any rifle ranges that are within 2 hours of the city that are accessible by train and/or driving (I can rent a car if need be)? It'd be great to meet up with some people too, and I'd have to rent/share rifles, but I'd be more than happy to pay for ammo/range fees/buy you lunch. Maybe somewhere in NJ, Long Island, upstate NY, or CT?

And yes I realize I'm gonna get some crap for moving to the city, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do

Thanks all

i live out on long island (st james..half way on the north short), there are 2 outdoor ranges that i have gone to forever:

Calverton exit 70 or 71 on the LIE:
big sand pit
pistol, 50,100,200 yards
during the summer months they close the parking lot and from 4-7pm (if i remember) you can get to 300
hot dog truck, crappy wood benches but 200 yards is 200 yards.

Brookhaven rifle pistol range: exit 68 on LIE.
"real rifle range"
cement benches
covered etc
50, 100,200 yards
separate pistol area
skeet and trap
they have benchrest comps once in a while

i also belong to a private club ($2-300 a year) Old Bethpage rifle and pistol club
im not a fan of shooting indoors but this place has 2 100 yard under ground rifle tubes.
nice when its cold and rainy
no range officer calling out lines hot or clean up your brass, so you shoot twice as much in half the time
key card in, opens at 6am and closes at 12pm (but you can stay as long as you want once your in)
99% of the time its only me

Just found this link, lists a few
http://www.lioutdoorsman.com/gun-ranges/

this place is 50 yards rifle and pistol but its closer to the city, cops usually qualify there etc.

i know there is a club in the city that allows you to store firearms in the city but i forget the name.

also search for ranges in Weschester county NY, alot of people who work in the city live there (cops fireman etc), more rural and alot of trains because of the proximity. alot clubs let you rent a locker and leave your stuff there because its a pain to own a shotgun in Manhattan.

look at renting the smallest storage facility locker you can close to what ever range you go to. leave a shot gun in there. a few bucks a month will probably be cheaper than renting each time.

Sheepdog warrior, catskills NY ( 100-1000++) hourly rates, monthly prs matches etc

Granby MA. Granby bow and gun club. 100-1020 ( monthly uspsa/prs/22nrl) regularly open out to 505yrd.

According to Google, Cherry Ridge range is 1 1/2 hours drive from Times Square - https://www.anjrpc.org/page/cherry_ridge

Pistol range, 50/100 yard rifle range, 200/300 yard long range, .22lr plinking range, shotgun/clay range.

Not public but reasonable membership. Range Officers are reasonable people.

Scenic part of NJ that most people (who only see Newark airport or Hoboken) don't appreciate...

I've heard of the Granby range, and the Catskill range looks fantastic. These will likely be a once a year adventure, but definitely worth the time/money

I think this could work well. At some point in the nearish future, I'm gonna put a takedown rifle together for out here. I was originally thinking a 16-18" barrel 223 with a WTO switch lug and an MPA lite folder, but more and more i think a 22 might be the smartest choice. I could shoot at indoor ranges, and a 200ish yard range would be more than plenty to get a "long range" feel that a 6.5 would need 400-700 yards for - plus cheap ammo is always nice

There's these two on Staten Island:

Don't know anything about them other than they exist.

This looks like a solid option - I haven't been out to long island much and this would be a good way to get me out there

ill double check if you want but i believe the train goes out there.
long island used to be huge in defense, calverton is where Grumman was back in the day so trains should still go out there.

Calverton or Brookhaven is your best best if you want outdoors. Calverton is wild, brookhaven is more civil but they like to yell at you for the littlest shit. If you have a significant other you can drag them along and go the Hamptons after
