I've all but decided to purchase a Proof Carbon barrel in 7mm /08 , AI , or SAW and would like to know what the barrel life is like on 6mm . 6.5mm , & 308 just to get an idea of barrel life . Would those that have purchased a Proof share their experiences ?
Thanks !

Proof is up there with the best for accuracy potential and quality. From what I've seen personally, I believe they're the best CF barrel for sure. I need to get a hold of a Hardy.

For barrel life, most of the 6's are in the 1200-1800 range. 6.5's usually go 2500-3500, and .308 is generally considered a 5000+ ordeal. Very dependent on how quickly you fire how many rounds, and how hot they're loaded.

The most accurate rifle i have ever owned has a Proof carbon barrel. The rifle is chambered in 6 creedmoor shooting Copper Creek ammunition. It truly is a .2moa rifle. I have 2 more rifle with Proof barrels and they are almost as accurate. All my future re barrel jobs or new custom rifles will have Proof barrels installed.

West Texas Switchlug with Proof Carbon Fiber barrels in 6.5 Creedmoor and .308. Both barrels shoot as good as my Krieger and Bartlien barrels. You won’t be disappointed as far as accuracy.

This helps alot , as long as I can get 2,000 rounds fairly HOT in 7mm That's good'nuff ! , I've pretty much decided 7mm SAW from WTO is the way to go and they may get the total re-barrel provided they can do M70 actions . If not LRI .

Shit, I can not get 2000 rounds or anywhere close out of a hot 7mm.. I am running 168s at 3150 and the barrels goes from one hole 5 round groups, to just ok in as little as 900 ish.. some have been better..

On the other hand I took a 1 hole 6.5, and rand 4k+ but it was shooting some 1+MOA, not something you want from a custom gun. Point being your accuracy standards determine when the barrel is done.

Barrels burn as reloader do; it is up to you to decide what speed and accuracy matters or is acceptable.

7SAW is gonna be a 162/168 around 2900. So big difference there

FWIW. I have a blank on the way to WTO that's gonna be a 7SAW

When I said HOT loads I only meant the limits of the brass , the information posted by WTO about loads/coal & powder / primer combinations are what I plan on doing but I would like a round count from Proof Carbon users in this round .
Thanks !

I have done some testing on my "GoLite" PRS / Hunting gun in 6x47 based Mausingfield and a Proof barrel. I believe that the accuracy is as good as my other match barrels: Bartlien, Kreiger ... etc. I also stress tested the barrel shooting 20+ rounds fired at a 1" dot to see if the POI wanders as it heats up - it doesn't. My father had a custom gun 280 AI built on a proof and it also shoots phenomenally .2's and .3's all day long.

I don't know how long they last only have 650-ish rounds through mine ... I ASS-U-ME that they will last the same as other premium SS match barrels (1,600 - 2,000) in the 6x47.

Here are notes gun/barrel:

I’m thinking about getting a second tempest built with a carbon barrel this round. Will see how well the 7mmSAW performs first though before deciding on another calibre.

I have had several of this barrels and would agree that the accuracy is as good as others. The negative I did experience was that when I put a suppressor on them and do shot strings of ~10 shots (1 mag), I saw a .5mil shift in POI. My zero would return when the barrel cooled but the shift is repeatable and I no longer run suppressors on them because of this.

Spoke with Proof regarding this and they indicated they had heard of this happening and acknowledged some shift could occur and that it would likely very by barrel.

Personally, this was not what I was looking for so I moved away from CF barrels.

I found that by optimizing barrel contour, my steel barrel weighted very close to what my CF barrel did for less than half the price.

FWIW....I had almost 3000 rounds on a 300 wsm and it still shot 1/2". The throat was very worn and my bullets seated way out but it would still shoot. My experience is that the heat of long shot strings affect barrel life more than total round count.

That's good to know ! , for my application long shot strings are not a concern nor poi shifts with a suppressor , my main concerns are barrel rigidity and cold bore repeatability and weight . I will most likely purchase a Sendero contour if I cannot get a Bull from Proof direct for 7mm .

mdesign do you think getting a the bull barrel profile would help mitigate the poi shifts?
