Looking for a new Remage style barrel for a remington 700. Who all makes them? I wanted to get a criterion but they refuse to chamber short action magnums. I believe pac-nor makes them as well as patriot valley. Any other options out there I should be looking at?

There is a good reason they won’t do short magnums. Chamber wall thickness is significantly reduced. The OD goes from 1.25” to under 1.00” (minor diameter on threads) in combination with a big fat cartridge.

This is why Savage created the large shank actions for short magnum to work with their barrel nut systems.

I’m not saying it won’t work and I’m sure you can talk a maker into doing it. Just making you aware why they won’t do it.

I get the fact that the shank is smaller so less wall thickness, and it could potentially create a weakness. However, it seems contradictory when you will chamber a long action magnum. Why is a long action magnum okay on a remage setup, but not a short action magnum?????

That is a really good deal.

However I wanted a lighter contour. I am building more of a hunting rifle in a Grayboe stock. I believe the heaviest contour recommended is a #5.

Can McRee or someone else easily re-contour the barrel to a lighter profile?

I looked at the bugnut. is it basically a shouldered barrel, but also uses a nut as well? thus the shouldered barrels thread length is much longer for the nut. Also is there a gap between the nut and the shoulder of the barrel?

One other intriguing item is the Barloc. It seems like it can be used on shouldered barrel or barrel nut, and you tighten it down to create the torque for the barrell with out needing a action and barrel vise. Can this be used on a shouldered remington barrel? if so who sets up barrels for the barloc?

There are two versions of the Barloc (one with the barrel nut and one without for shouldered use). It does allow you to swap barrels without needing a barrel vise and/or action wrench and it should work on the Remington actions with the correct shank size (they list Remington, savage and even large shank savage). It's very easy and it works very well for me. Patriot Valley is doing barloc shouldered barrels, as is Long Rifles Inc. With an unknown action, you would still need to send the action to the gunsmith for chambering with a shouldered Barloc. With one of the known actions (Mausingfield, Nucleus, Bighorn, etc), it's an off-the-shelf pre-chambered barrel from PVA (IIRC).

Has anyone used a barrel from Ragged Hole Barrels?

Looks like they use Wilson barrels setup for Remage system. I was wondering if the Wilson barrels would be any good? They are much cheaper at $315 with the muzzle threaded. Its so cheap it makes me wonder if they are bad or the gunsmithing (threading) is gonna be crap.

Put a Wilson barrel on an AR-15 once and its the best shooting AR I've pulled the trigger on.
