I need help deciding between the Athlon cronus btr or the vortex razor hd gen 2. I haven’t put my hands on either one so I have no way of seeing for myself. I don’t need fanboy opinions either. Anyone dealt with both what were your thoughts seem to be around the same price point.

Not taking price in to account as they are close enough it’s not a big deal.

So,

Which reticle do you like? If h59 or T3, you have to go vortex. And it will be a few hundred more on top.

Like both reticle offerings? Move on to next questions

Does the weight difference matter?

Are locking turrets important to you?

Does the vortex infinite zero appeal to you?

Those questions should make your choice pretty easy. For me, easy choice of the vortex. I like their reticle, the weight doesn’t bother me, locking turrets are great. Infinite zero is really nice and also annoying at the same time.

God damnit, you're making me regret my cronus btr. fucking hell.

having just made the switch from the BTRs to the razor with ebr-7c.

my vote is for the razor. slightly better glass. i like the turrets better and it's just beefy.

with that said - the cronus is a great scope and can be found lightly loved on here for $1400ish all the time.

i just sold a APRS1 floating dot NIB BTR for $1450 - and a used APRS reticle for $1250

I have 2 razor hd’s both with the ebr-2c reticle, I like them both weight isn’t a major concern. I haven’t ever messed with the Chronus so I’m no help there

I also have 2 Razor HD Gen2 and the Cronus BTR. The Razor has the very slight edge but I LOVE my Cronus BTR. Call Doug at Cameraland. Hes got the best pricing and customer service. I'm about to grab another Cronus BTR if that says anything...

If you like the reticle better, want locking turrets, or the infinite zero, any of those features individually is worth an extra few hundred.

If none of those features matter to you and you like the Cronus reticle, then no, it’s not.

I have a Cronus on my first Precision Rifle. Now I’m currently building a new one and in the same boat. Should I get another Cronus or make the small upgrade to the Razor. I’ve never had any issue with my Cronus and I do like the reticle better than just about anything Vortex offered up until the 7c came out. Never seen a need for the locking turrets and I’ve shot quite a few comps. I’m sure they’re nice though.

I appreciate the comments. I think for me the biggest thing will be looking through a Razor and shooting it a bit. At this level I feel it’s more what appeals to the users eye.

The infinite zero is an annoyance for me not enough to be a deal breaker but Cronus has the edge there.

Everything else I would say Razer other than the fact it's made of apparently Japanese lead (that damn thing is a beast and must be held to be appreciated..)

Edit now that I think about it as much as I change bullets and therefore zero the infinite zero stop may be a deal breaker for me personally but I can see why some would love it.

I'm honestly just curious how the Brownells scope that is upcoming will fit in a conversation like this since it is also a LOW built scope at significantly lower price.

Will it be the cheap alternative to Cronus which is imo the cheap alternative to gen2 Razer....

The Brownells scope will be interesting. At that price, I have a hard time believing it will be better than the SWFA HD, either BTR or non-BTR Cronus, or the Delta Stryker (all LOW optics that are more expensive than the Brownells unit).

I had the Weaver Tactical 6-30, which (IIRC) was very close to the exterior tube (and price point) of to the Razor 2 and also built by LOW; glass was significantly better in the Razor despite all the internet praise as being "as good as". I owned both side by side and don't have much brand loyalty to either.

People love to think they got a deal on something or that they are somehow more clever than others for buying something different. Go look at reviews on MidwayUSA of Wolf Steel Case being "SUB MOA ALL DAY" and Konus scopes being "as good as Nightforce" for the more extreme examples of this mentality.

I don’t mean to derail this any more, but has LOW been confirmed as the OEM for the Brownells scopes?

More on top to this thread, I have two Cronus BTRs they’re fantastic scopes. Optically very comparable to the Razor G2. I’ve had mine side but side with a Razor that’s on one of my dad’s rifles. We both agreed it was a wash to our eyes. Tracking has been true so far, but I need to tall target test still to verify.

I spent a long time on this same choice. No Cronus regret, and I really like the floating cross. Locking or capped windage would make it perfect. I still may get a Razor now that prices are dropping.

Tango6
Burris XTR3/Steiner
Nightforce NXS

I'm in the same boat as you.. time for an upgrade

Only problem is it's hard to get your hands on some of these to see what your eyes like..

The only one I've tested so far is the NXS and the Razor Gen 2.. So far the Gen 2 was my favorite. I did look thru a ATACR and the Mil R was way to thick IMO

I went with a Cronus saved $300 don’t feel like I needed the locking turrets. Cronus has more elevation and parallax down to 25 yards which is what I needed for my vudoo. Really like the new floating dot reticle as well.

I have two of each, besides the locking turrets (which are no big deal to me) I'd call them equals...btw I am thinking of selling the GA Precision in the fore (.308 with less than 200 rfd fired).
