Remington 700 adl tactical 308

Hi I’m new to snipers forum. I could use some advise/help. a few months back I bought a 308 Remington 700 adl tactical from dicks sporting. Since then I put a krg stock. Over the weekend I took rifle to a gun shop so they could put a muzzle break to mount a suppressor. I was informed that my adl Remington 700 was a piece of junk and I need to by myself a better tactical rifle. I know there are better tactical rifles.
Can or would anyone care to weigh in on my rifle!

Unless there is something mechanically wrong with it, chances are the rifle is better than you. Shoot the snot out of it. You will have a damn good idea of what you like and need by the time the barrel is shot out. Now if there is something wrong with it- like the threads are off when they went to change a mount for you- then get Remington to fix it.

My guess is that they were going to ty to get you to trade yours in for pennies on the dollar, sell you a new overpriced gun, and then sell yours for a hefty markup.
You don't install a muzzle break to install a suppressor. You thread the barrel if it is not threaded already and install EITHER a brake or a suppressor. If that was what you went in asking for, he probably pegged you as a noobie and an easy mark for some quick cash.
Go to a qualified gunsmith.

Fuck that shit. Remington might be worthless at making themselves a profit, but they can still build an accurate and reliable 700 more times than not. If you are doing precision shooting and want the standard, it's the 700 pattern action. Are there better rifles out there? Surely. Are there worse? Absolutely.

Take your rifle to a gunsmith, not a gunstore where 75% of the time no gunsmith will ever touch your gun. I use different local smiths for handguns, bolts, AR pattern, and HK90 pattern. You unknowingly and logically went to a gun "dealership" for the modification, but you need to find a performance shop. Not trying to condescend to you, you just got told a load of bullshit from that employee. Hunting rifle gunsmiths are all over the place, check what is close to you.

i took my built-out SPS tactical in .308 to a shop to see if theyd be interested....clerk said hed have to have his "gunsmith" look it over......he came back 10 mins later saying the "barrel was shot out" and hed give me $250 for it........

this gun has had maybe 300 rounds through it....the barrel is brand new.

he also offered me $200 on my practically new Remington 1911....saying the dealer price for a new remington 1911 is not much more than that.

i told him to fuck off and left.

sold the 1911 at another shop for $450.

What did they say was wrong with it? Just that it's a 700 adl and that's the problem? Did the smith (likely some dipshit at a gunstore that took a class or some such shit) actually find a problem? Bore too far out of alignment with barrel profile to mount a break? Something else?

If you want to keep it, you'll need an actual smith for threading. Post approx location for recommendations for a local smith or ship to a smith to have the work done.

I may be way off, but an in-store smith sounds like a glorified parts changer to me.

700 sps came threaded right?
Should not need a Smith to install muzzle device.

Look it up on YouTube or better the mfg site of the break or can adapter.

I suggest using rokset if a can adapter, a loose adapter may cause damage to can.

Dick's is pretty anti-2A. We all fucking hate them around here. Not your fault, probably had no idea. Box store style FFLs are generally piss poor for anything except ammo deals, honestly. Local mom and pop all the way for me.

Internet search for a real gunsmith near you, and actually read their reviews. Do not go to one that's got a fucking sales rep third wheel pulling your ass into buying an entirely new rifle from them.

DO NOT let other people tell you their opinions on guns, especially those who try to push their opinions off on others as facts, until YOU yourself has gotten a good feel of how your gear operates and performs.

The shooting market is bullish. And 'gun shop employees' are notorious for not knowing what the fuck they are talking about. The weather is shaping up great now. Take that rifle and a load of cartridges, head out to where the blue sky and white clouds extend as far as the eye can see, and make some steel ring. Most guns will take more than a few rounds to "break in" and for you to get a feel of the mechanism.

You made a solid choice by selecting a Remington 700. That name is synonymous with dependability and workmanship. If I ever decide to join the long range bolt gun master race, I think I will settle for the 700 platform as my first choice.

I think you have a fine starter rifle. Especially with a KRG stock on it instead of the ADL plastic stock it comes with. I too bought a ADL tactical but in 6.5CM from Dicks just before they went full retard. I've been burned by Remington before but this one is very accurate. I can't bitch at all about a $499 rifle shooting just a hair under 1moa with factory match ammo. Handloads have tightened it up even more. I can say that this cheap POS rifle outshoots my skill level at this point. Sure, the action isn't slicker than snot and it isn't trued but it works for me.

I wouldn't recommend selling it for a loss and buying another. Sounds like a gun shop trying to make a quick buck. If you are hot on buying something next on the wish list look hard at getting better optics. The higher tier you can go the better. Optics seem to move from rifle to rifle as you progress if you invest in good glass from the get go. Always having a solid, reliable scope makes learning a hell of a lot easier. Then you can focus on fundamentals. Isn't your ADL tactical already threaded? Shouldn't be an issue to spin on a QD muzzle break yourself.

No nothing wrong with barrel or anything else. It was/is because it is adl Remington. That I’m wasting time with my Adl. At one time in my life I could afford the best, but I’ve hit bumps/obstacles in my life and financials so I had to regroup. So I bought the adl and now I feel that I made a bad choice according to gunsmith and store representative. What’s hard to explain to them is at this time this is all can afford.
So this is why I’m seeking advice on my adl 700 Remington tactical 308 caliber.

Yes it’s all ready thread. I took in so they could put a break muzzle for my suppressor. I have a Leupold fire dot 3-9x40 scope on it.

Don't ever let someone else tell you your stuff is junk. We ALL started somewhere and most with a basic Remington or Savage that shot 1 moa or better with hand loads. Post a picture of your ADL so we can see what we're dealing with and there are a number of guys on here who will help you get what you NEED to do some shooting. .308 is a great round and will do just about anything you want if you buy or load some decent ammo.

If you watch the classifieds there will be a decent muzzle break for a reduced price that will fit the bill. If I had an extra 30 cal break I would probably give it to you. Make sure you look for a self timing break or you may need a gunsmith to time it. (level it)

Fuck that store, dont EVER go back! Remington 700 is a great platform to work with. I own 2 and could not be happier with their performance. Like others have said, troll the bolt rifles thread and the PX (once you're allowed access to buy), and you'll find all the info your brain can handle. Welcome to the Hide. Great bunch, and a wealth of knowledge 'round here.

A friend of mine has the same rifle. It easily shoots 168 or 175 grain Federal match ammo 1 moa or less at 100 yards. We have shot it suppressed with subsonic loads and it did well too. For the money it is a good rifle.

Remington is a great platform to start with. My only bitch is that they cut the leade so long that depending on the bullet you may have a hell of a jump to the lands. I have a 700 in .223 that is at my smith's now having the chamber recut and the barrel set back. It will be interesting to see if it actually makes any difference. If it does, I have three more Remmys I'll have done.
The .223 shot a dime at 100 yards but the barrel is a 1:12 twist so I'm limited to the lighter bullets and wanted to get rid of some of the jump.

Shoot the hell out of it. My only bitch with my 700's is the trigger. There is all kinds of aftermarket stuff for them. Do you have the x mark pro adjustable trigger?

@Mean green Does this shop have any high end glass? Go back in a few weeks to put hands on every nice scope they have. Ask questions. Ask for advice. When you find the one that you'd buy, tell them this is the scope for me. Then tell them that's what you're going to order with a smile and walk out.

Edit: Thank them. Don't forget to thank them!

Edit, Edit: Extra points if you get them to walk outside with you with several scopes to look through them in natural light.

1. There is nothing wrong with the rifle you chose, especially in that KRG.

2. If your muzzle isn't threaded, take it to a qualified smith and have it threaded, then install whatever muzzle device you choose.

3. My SPS tactical 308 is one of the best shooting rifles I own, buy ammo and shoot the hell out of yours.

4. Tell the gun shop/gunsmith to fuck off, and don't go back.

5. Buy your next one from somewhere besides Dick's.

send that barreled action up to Long Rifles and get a full build for a great price... when you wear out that barrel in 10k rounds or so.

Might look here for some smith ideas. May be a place to start. Look for one that does it as their business, not a sideline and certainly not in a big box store.

Buy some Federal Gold Medal Match.
Buy good glass, the best you can swing. Good mounts also. (neither will be cheap)
Find a local mentor if you can.

All comments about there recent financial struggles and some quality control issues aside, Remington still makes a solid rifle that usually print very respectable groups with good ammunition, get some good glass on it and go shoot, a good repeatable scope with a mil/mil reticle on a low cost rifle is usually a better way to go than a custom rifle with a tasco turd from Walmart. spend your money on ammo, reloading equipment and range time, once you shoot the barrel out, do some more upgrades. It's a better rifle than the Remington 783, Ruger american, or Savage axis they would have sold you that has no aftermarket support for only a few dollars less.

Just a side note.
I figure rem 700 in 308 tac is used by many le dept.
They like standard known preformance and reliability.

I'll bet it is close to 50% of all the departments swat go to.

weighing in a little late here, but i literally built the same gun. ADL from dicks on sale durring black friday, krg stock, surfire brake, vortex optics, warne rings. Shoot awesome. id like to upgrade the trigger but thats it. heres how i see it. shoot the piss out of it them upgrade later. I can take this gun out to 900 on a good day. best part is when i go into idaho im not afraid to drop it down a mountain.


she loves lake city 175 gr and of course 168 gr.... havntr tried the 180 berger

Way too many rifle upgrade recommendations in here for a virgin rifle and new shooter to the sport and obviously on a tight budget. Best upgrade for a new rifle is a press and set of dues to cut ammo costs in half.

Make full brass empty, fill them back up, repeat until barrel is smoked or you exceed the accuracy capability of the rifle. Attend as many matches and clinics as possible, read on the web when not. By then you know what you actually need.

I have no qualms with the x mark pro adj trigger.
Mine is gtg, would spend more on optics.

Maybe I just got a good one? Not holding me back at all.

Nothing wrong with your ADl man. The action is the same 700 action they all have. No, it's not a 5R barrel or a HS stock like the higher end models come with, but its still a great starting point with potential and a vast aftermarket.

I'm in your shoes, I usually buy cheaper end stuff when compared to high end. You got to start somewhere and theres not a damn thing wrong with your ADL. It's just not loaded with options is all. I think it's a fine rifle, as many here would agree. If it shoots and functions, that's all that matters. Shoot that factory barrel out then go to basically any good gunsmith to have it rebarreled with whatever high end barrel you want.

Dont sweat what those idiots said, they likely dont know shit...
