Wanting to build a 300PRC with a Remington action. (If you have a different action you would recommend that is under $1k, please feel free)

The Remington part number "767-000-870WB" is a standard .534" face Long Action (300 Win Mag). The other part number is "767-000-956WB" and that is the .534" bolt face for the Ultra Mag. According to Brownells, the Ultra Mag action has different cuts on the feed ramps.

Which action is better for a 300 PRC, and why?

Thanks!!

Alternatives:
  • Alamo Precision Rifles Gen II, LA, Mag BF: $825
  • American Rifle Company Nucleus, LA, Mag BF, scope rail cant of choice: $1000
  • Defiance Tenacity, LA, Mag BF: $935
If you do get the R700 basic action, I’d strongly recommend you also do the following, which essentially brings it to the price point of a custom that already has all of this or makes it irrelevant:
  1. True action bore, lugs, face, threads (note: R700 take-offs and most pre-threaded blanks can no longer be made to fit)
  2. Open scope base screw holes to #8-40
  3. Bush and true bolt face, turn down firing pin, install M16 extractor and second ejector
  4. True bolt body and lugs (note: its more likely you’ll toss the old bolt entirely and start from a fresh oversized bolt).
I’d go straight to Chad at @LongRifles Inc. if you want to go the Remington+Services route instead of the custom route.

You are right, with all the gunsmithing the cost is pretty close to the $8-900 mark. I’ll check those actions you recommend. Looking to see part compatibility for bottom metal, trigger, etc...

Thank you for the great info and taking the time to respond!

All of these are compatible with R700 triggers, inlets, bottom metal, etc., and APR and ARC take Savage small shank barrel threads. Not sure on the APR and Tenacity tolerance stackups but the Nucleus can take shouldered prefits as well.

Glad to help!

(Thanks for the threading correction, @Bandit31 )

Can you build a 300 PRC or 6.5 PRC on a REM 700 LA or do you need a magnum action? and could you "switch" out the bolt on the 700 LA for a magnum to facilitate the build? Thanks

The Tenacity uses standard Remington threads. Still have the option for pre fits however, just on a smaller scale compared to the savage small shank.

If you have a long action 700 with a magnum bolt face, then no need to swap anything.

If not, you can open the bolt face up and install an M16 extractor or swap the bolt with a PTG or Mack Bros if they’re still being made.

I built them on both. I prefer the standard magnum action for box fed rifles. For a DM it doesn't matter.
Ah, you’ve done both! Care to share some insight to your preference? Is it just a feed difference?

Also, I’m acronym challenged - “DM” = Detachable Magazine? Box fed = Standard Remington ADL/BDL (I know, more acronyms)?

If I’m correct on the terminology, with the magazine feed, do the rounds sit a little higher and hit the feed ramp in a different spot?

Thanks!

Yes DM means detachable mag and the magazine controls feeding not the action rails. With standard ADL/BDL box magazines the feed rails in the action control the round.

My 300PRC is built on a Rem 700 LA Ultra Mag. Just be sure to use the windowed Ultra Mag magazine and LA Magnum follower. No issues with feeding from either the hinged floor-plate setup or M5 DBM (my M5 DBM is CIP length).

My 6.5PRC is built on a Bighorn Origin LA mag - yes LA. I went LA to avoid potential magazine constraints. Feeding was somewhat of an issue with a hinged floor-plate setup, included windowed UM magazine a LA mag follower. Switched over to M5 DBM and feeding issues are non existent. FWIW, I would not recommend the Bighorn Origin action. It's a great action, lots of bang for the buck. However, the loading/ejection port is not as open as a Rem 700 or Defiance Deviant Hunter. Loading rounds can be a challenge. Using a DBM system negates this 'flaw'.

Gonna build another 6.5PRC in the Spring. Defiance Deviant Hunter cut for a Wyatt's extended mag will be the basis.
