What all is involved? Is anyone making barrels for these? Or will it require a gunsmith taking a blank and fitting it to the action?

Mine is doing fine for now, but, mainly just curious going forward.

I'd say shoot it and get a cheap CZ455 scout donor setup for $250 and put a custom barrel on it. You can never have enough 22lr....

I'm a Tikka Fanboy, sucks I picked this Savage up a couple weeks before the T1X was announced. I'd probably start there if I did go for another rifle.

Not a fan of this effectively becoming a disposable rifle at that point. Paying what I'm assuming to be $500ish to have a $250 rifle rebarreled sucks as well. Should have done more research I guess.

Are the CZ's easy to work on? I know some came with a .17HMR swappable barrel so I'd assume they have to be...?

As long as it shoots good and you take care of the barrel (cleaned and oiled when not used for an extended period), then I doubt you'd ever need to replace the barrel on the Savage. 22LR doesn't wear out a barrel like big bore rifles.

To answer the OP I did alot of research on rebarelling the Savage rimfire. If I remember correctly the barrels are help in with a pin and press fit into the action. Any competent smith should easily be able to spin up a new barrel for it and press fit or glue it into the receiver. Also the Savage rimfires do have a good amount of aftermarket stocks available for it depending on what you're wanting.

I think it's also a good point to know that at that point you're stepping into the CZ 455, 457 and Tikka T1X price range that are going to be better quality rifles from the get go.

I see it's an older thread, but I pulled a barrel from a Savage b22FV today. The only tricky part is the front allen bolt that holds the mag well in place is also a set screw that rides in a slot on the barrel behind the chamber. Just loosen it up, and the barrel nut broke loose with a pair of 12" soft jaw channel locks and a large pry bar holding the action. No barrel vise needed, just pre-mark the barrel for re-install etc.

I'm pulling this one to taper lap out a "bubble" just in front of the chamber! Such a PITA. but if I don't do this it will just shoot so so. When I slugged the barrel the dementions were the same at the chamber and the muzzle.... .2212"/.2173" so I have plenty of room to lapp a little out to get to about .2214"/.2175" or so. Otherwise if an aftermarket barrel was available I would screw it on! Have fun! G>
