I have a Tikka T3x in 223. Using Hornady Match 73 ELD and 68 BTHP I get 0.7" groups at 100 yard (measured edge to edge). This is with the factory barrel. Is there any accuracy to be gained by going to a match grade barrel? I know alot of times the ammo might be the limiting factor. I don't reload, so buying Hornady Match is my best option.

I can’t say with factory ammo. Possibly if the barrel chamber was cut using the factory ammo you’re shooting as a sample case to chamber to. If you did reload, I bet you could shorten your groups even more with that Tikka barrel and definitely a match barrel :)

So, you have a factory gun that shoots factory ammo in the .4’s (regularly I presume ?)

No, there is not much to gain for you in either hand-loading or aftermarket anything.

Am I being greedy? I was never able to get decent groups with this gun prior to putting on a new scope. I shot 3x 5 round groups at 100 yards. Just checking the ammo I had on hand. Both shot 0.7". So, if 3 groups makes it regularly, then yes. I have to get more ammo to be able to evaluate consistency.

If your skills are high level, then yes, a match grade barrel would most likely make a significant difference. I have a DTA with a SAC 223 conversion (Bartlein barrel) that will shoot factory match grade ammo in the .1s ( measured center to center). Not every group, obviously, but with pretty good regularity.

I also have a factory Remington 700 that won't shoot better than 1/2 moa no matter how good the ammo is.

Have you tested ammo from any of the custom shops which are (should be) more consistent round to round than bulk producers like Hornady? I personally shoot ASYM Ammo in my Tikka Tactical, and grab a case or two whenever they run a 15-20% off sale. There are many others out there. I’m like you, I don’t reload but want as much accuracy as I can get, within reason.

Thanks. ASYM doesn't seem to have any of the match 223 in stock. Anyone else you have experience with?

I forgot the machine they run .223 on is down. They told me on the phone last week they’re working on it, but it’ll be a while. I shoot their 55gr Vmax out to 325 (longest target at the house). I picked up some heavier stuff for longer distances.

I haven’t tried any others, but Copper Creek, Reloads of Dallas, and Spark Munitions are a few I’ve seen recommended on here.

Thanks. I will look into these as well. It will be interesting to compare to hornady match.

You have a sub moa barrel thatll last quite a few years of regular shooting and want to change it...to maybe get a slightly smaller group that youd never notice unless shooting prone anyways

Shot a few groups today with new ammo...Hornady 75gr. BTHP Match. I think my gun prefers this ammo over the others I have tried. After shooting these groups, I went on to smack some steel at 300 yards...love hearing the hit! I think this gun is a keeper, will invest in a new bolt handle from sterk at this point since I'm satisfied with the gun and will keep it. I will still try the small scale manufacturers recommended here though. See how the 77 gr. shoot out of my gun.
