Are my expectations out of line?

Hey guys,

1st time custom bolt rifle builder here. Just received my rifle back from a vendor I'm not going to name, but I'm confident you all have heard of, if not bought something from them before. Let's just say I didn't have this work done by "Joe Schmoe".

I've had other guns modified in the past, ie optic cuts and frame work to my Glocks, but as stated above this is my first time building a custom long gun.

I'm curious the communities opinion of this work, specifically where the chassis was cut to accommodate the bolt knob? Is this pretty standard? Let me know your thoughts below.

Thanks in advance.

Agreed, that is sub-par. I don't agree with merely fixing it & moving on, however. I would give them the opportunity to fix it, then go from there. If you wanted to be doing this work yourself, that's what you would've done. However, you paid them for a job & didn't get what you paid for. If you fix it, there will be no reason for them to not assume this is acceptable work & continue turning it out.

While its not "wrong" because it works.... it DEFINITELY should be finished way better since you paid for it and unacceptable as a custom rifle builder. I wouldnt want to put my name on it.

This looks like something that anyone could do with a harbor freight dremel. At a minimum, they could have cartridge rolled it or smoothed it out evenly with a dowel and sandpaper.

Absolute joke.

Stick it back in their shop and have them fix it immediately.

If they half ass it again or refuse put their name out there so the rest of us don’t get caught.

On top of it..they could have screwed up your chassis (yes extra plastic)but that’s not their call...it’s your money.

Also it’s a AI chassis, not uncommon. I would think they worked with them before.

I would expect my smith to tell me up front “hey you know with this action and this chassis I have to release some material etc”

It’s like the first day of school.

Actually, what I would have done would be text a photo to the gunsmith and let him know I wasn't happy with the notch, then I would fix it myself and move on.

But now that you've posted the photo it's too late. :)

We've got our torches lit and pitchforks ready, and the vat of tar is just coming to a boil. What do you expect us to do with all these feathers if you leave us hanging?

Definitely deserves the "WTF" be asked to the shop. Might be a screwup and a stand up outfit will address it. Of course if you have to box it up and ship it out I would just fix it myself.

I appreciate the responses and got a good laugh from a few of them. Aside from removing material for the bolt knob, does anyone else know specifically what has to be done to the AI AX to fit a TL3 Long Action? It doesn't look like they removed any material to fit the tang.

I'm contemplating just having them send me a new chassis. The problem with just asking for new skins is that that the frame is cut pretty poorly as well.

You all have reinforced that I should expect better work than this. I'm going to give them a chance to make this right before putting them on blast.

Holy shit...

I would be demanding a new chassis if I were in your shoes. That is horrible workmanship and QC.

I feel your pain OP. My first custom had a million problems too. Don't get discouraged. There are plenty of awesome smiths out there who will blow you away with their perfection.

I hope the build works out okay.

Im interested in the results as well. I agree that the workmanship is unacceptable and i would want better if i paid a competent gunsmith to do the work. It definitely looks like it was just hit with a dremel to “fix” it real quick to get it out the door.

ayayay... This malpractice is unacceptable. I hope its not a shop I’ve used before. Any reputable shop would make this right. You got class OP, most people would have lost their religion with this debacle.

There was a fair amount of work that had to be done on mine. More so than yours but mine is a pre 2014 chassis.
