Converting my AR to 224 valk..need help

What MPDS13 said. I have put heavier buffers in all my nonstandard AR’s if I’m not running them suppressed. In that case the adjustable gas block is a must. The heavy buffer just makes the rifles shoot much smoother. It really made a big difference in my 6.5 Grendel.

One thing about heavier buffers, they might feel nice from prone but they make self spotting off a barricade go to shit. It slows down the cyclic rate noticeably and about the time you want to see where the bullet went your operating system is still chunk-chunking around in there.

I have never had a problem with that. I have a 223 and a 224 Valkyrie that I have crazy heavy rifle length buffers in and they shoot like a 22. The 224 Valkyrie has a +2 gas system and the 223 has a standard rifle length gas system. I took the rifle length buffer and replaced three of the weights with tungsten. I think the buffer is close to 10 oz. They are the softest shooting AR’s I have ever shot. They are both built as precision rifles though and I don’t try to rapid fire with them.

Have you tested light vs. heavy from crappy positions? I'm not really talking about rapid fire, just typical things you might see in a precision rifle match.

We'll probably just have to agree to disagree, I've tested reciprocal mass from 5.8oz up to 19oz and to me light components get you closer to a bolt gun feeling recoil, snappy but almost instantaneous. Heavier systems feel like an AK, sluggish and chunky. Most people characterize this as softer when drawn out is probably a more accurate description of the recoil impulse.

That is what I use the rifle for. I shoot the DRM class in the local PRS matches with it. For us that is 5.56/223 only. I guess you would need to shoot it to understand. Everyone who shoots it the first comment out of their mouth is that there is virtually no recoil at all. You can see your hits at 100 yards. The rifle basically never moves off target as long as you square up behind it like you should regardless of shooting position. The recoil response may in fact be more drawn out but it is so light it really doesn’t matter.
