The pins are for your position on the firing line. It an old tradition in the English country side so hopefully everyone gets a chance at first shot.
You pick them st random usually with eyes closed from the hunt master.

You get assigned to your grouse blind by lottery. The pins were numbered and you pull out the pin and that is your butt for the day.
It prevents the shooters from hogging the best lanes for a driven Grouse shoot.
You put the pins in a hat and pull them out and that is where you and your loader go.
A nice antique set can cost a grand.... they were often silver and made by places like Asprey.
