how to calculate maximum range ?

i mean what is the maximum distance can you get the bullet to fly (assuming roughly horizontal ground and you can aim as high as is optimal for max distance)
'Was thinking in terms of a safety zone around a range .. or if i shoot at targets over water what safety zone do i need behind the target ?

I tried using the Max point blank range calculation and giving it a very large height above LOS... the calculation appears to fall apart.

There might not be definitive answer but we can start estimating. I used my Kestrel and SK Biathlon with DSF modded profile.

I remember reading that the best angle for shooting max range is around 35 degrees, instead of 45. This is because at 45 it loses too much velocity/energy rising up.

So lets use ballistic calculator and see where 35 degrees (multiplied by 60 to get 2100moa) and converted to 610Radians.

That gets us 1475m / 1610yds.

If we use 40 degrees which is 2700moa / 785R we get a max range of 1535m / 1680yds.

After that it just starts adding up degrees.

At 1720m - 1750m it grows from 10953Radians to 15375 which is over 600 degrees! That is almost two turns...

That lets me determine that Kestrel just starts adding degrees even after bullet is no more even flying to the wanted direction.

So that tells us the truth is somewhere between 1600 and 1700 yds.

@Near miss that's one of the approaches i tried. i wasn't convinced the calculations were still valid at such high angles - some of the values were very suspect or obviously wrong (as you describe). For example the Absolute Drops would climb to >660m at 1400m then drop to 0m at 1450m!
Initially i thought that the answer would be somewhere close to where Absolute Drop = sin 45 x distance. but this is beyond the calculation window of Strelok.
If we use your suggestion of 35 deg then Absolute Drop = sin 35 x distance, this is also beyond the calculation window of Strelok .

27deg gives an answer of c. 1400m for Eley Match.
by 25.5 deg we still have an answer around 1375m.
22.5deg gives an answer of about 1350m

This appears to be pretty consistent but .... Given the sort of drops that i see when shooting anything beyond 200m i instinctively feel that 1400m is well beyond the real world reach of a .22lr round ... ?

I was hoping that there was a defined/correct/easy way of using Strelok to calculate this - one that i just didnt know

The JBM calculator gives 1900 yds for 40gr and 0.150 projectile.
1680 yds for 0.125 BC.

I suggest you keep safe direction of fire and aim low when unsure where you might hit.

Remember that the bullet can skip off the water.

I know with rimfires the errors are easier to make because it takes so many clicks or even turns that you might forget something.

But I maybe would not overplay it, apply same logic as when hunting.

If you were to shoot an animal, you would not use any maximum range calculations. You aim at the target, not upwards the sky.

For decades I've always said to others 34 degrees....however...I have no idea where that actual number came from originally. I know I heard or read about it somewhere...but can't remember now.

@Near miss my thought was that if the kids are shooting at targets floating in the fjord then they cant harm anyone on our side of the fjord. If the max range was say 800m then there is a good safety margin so that they cant hurt anyone on the other side of the fjord...

with a max range of 1600m unfortunately it is theoretically possible for a kid fooling around to give someone on the other side a headache by dropping a bullet on their head - not a good enough safety margin.

Yep, you are right.

You could try airguns.

Or shorts etc.
Not sure how far the 700fps rounds can travel, they might be good but rarely have accuracy potential.
