I am debating on if I really need a RRS tripod. I know I want their anvil 30 setup however. I only hunt with it, mainly thermal for coyotes. I am trying to decide on a possible alternative to a RRS tripod to place the anvil on?

I ended up with the carbon fiber Hogg saddle tripod as I just didn’t have the coin for the rrs.

My recommendation is to just buy the rrs if you can. I’m saving for one. The problem with conventional tripods 3/8 screw is that it’s easy to unscrew the head when a rifle is attached. The RRs system utilizes multiple screws to keep the headfrom screwing off when using a longer lever like a rifle.

You have plenty of options between entry level, $50 tripods and the $1000+ RRS stuff. Don't take this post as me saying RRS isn't worth the coin or that less expensive options are their equal.

The guys at Hog Saddle make a nice tripod that costs $150ish, if I remember correctly. I know a guy that's been using one for a couple of years with good success.

I bought the PVA Comp 40 for $500? $525? It's a great tripod, really stable. Come to find out its identical the Two Vets 40 Mike Mike. Then I learn they're both identical to the Inorel RT90C, which can be had for just under $300. All PVA and Two Vets did was import the RT90C, rebrand them, and tack on $200. Granted, I had my PVA for about a year before I learned of the RT90C, but I could've saved myself $200

Before I bought the PVA, I used a Feisol 3342 and 3372. The 3342 was in the $400ish range and the 3372 was $550ish? Again, that's if I remember correctly. Both were excellent! My 3372 is work issued, so I still have it, but i sold the 3342. I had no issues using the 3342 seated, kneeling, or standing. It wasn't as stable as the 3372 or PVA when standing, but the difference was minor, and when I was kneeling or seated, I couldn't tell a difference.

Colorado Tripod Company is coming out with one that is in the RRS price range, if I'm not mistaken. Early reports are positive.

I haven't even brought up the Leofoto or a few others that guys have discussed on here.

You can spend $1300+ and get the TVC33 with an Anvil. You can spend $200 to go with the Hog Saddle with an inexpensive ball head. Bottom line is you do have options

I split the difference between cheapo and RRS and went with a Feisol 3372. Looking at your other posts, looks like you do some night hunts for hogs and coyotes. That is what I use mine for here at home and when I go to Texas. I just put a little racquet tape at the bottom of the legs so they aren't noisy when I walk around with it. The pig saddle is okay, although the spring mechanism in it is noisy when it rattles around. Maybe the Hog Saddle is a little less noisy? I also have an Arca setup on a ball head, but it can be kind of a pain on the really dark nights to quickly get it hooked up when the hogs and dogs are more wary. I will say it is waaay more steady than the ol Primos trigger stick for sure, gives you a lot of confidence when you have a good rest.

My suggestion is the RRS. It's just too good for the weight/stability.

If you need a budget tripod I usually recommend the Innorel RT90C for PRS/NRL matches. But if you're carrying it in terrain, I'd step down to the Innorel RT80C. 3.35 lbs vs. 6+ for the 90 and more compact when folded.

Do get the Anvil 30 though. It's the shit.

You get a 75mm head on the PVA & TVS versions. The rt90c doesn't have the ability to take an anvil mount in the head like the other two. Is if worth the extra Jing? Idk?! Did you dislike the feisol 3372? It's very light and takes 75mm head as well for anvil. Would be great back country hunting.

The RT90C can accommodate an Anvil. You just have to use the Anvil, and I can't remember the exact nomenclature, but it's the one that doesn't come with a Series 2 or 3 apex. It'll screw onto the 3/8 thread, but a dab of loctite will keep it secure. There's also a guy making specific plates for the Anvil and the RT90C so you can use a set screw to secure the Anvil. The PVA is the RT90C, just rebranded, so if it works on the PVA, it'll work on the RT90C and the Two Vets 40 Mike Mike.

I still have the 3372. It's the 3342 I sold. Honestly, I didn't have any issues with the 3342. Super lightweight, just as stable as the PVA and 3372 when seated or kneeling. Standing is a different matter. The 3372 and PVA (and RT90C/40 Mike Mike, since they're all the same) offered a bit more stability due to the increased leg diameter. I only sold it because I didn't need three tripods, not because I disliked it.
