Barrett M22 with Garand Thumb

“The best sniper rifle in the world”. Do these folks even know about the AXMC/AX PSR exists? I’m sure the MRAD is nice, maybe one of the best, but thats a bold statement.

Oh and fluting makes a barrel of the same weight cooler... A smaller barrel will heat up faster than a fatter barrel, it’ll just cool off faster as well. Why not go with a Proof carbon fiber? Easy button.

Good videography though, beautiful shooting location. Am a fan of GT, but this video made me cringe a bit.

The older guy seems cool though, served in the special forces community in two countries.

AI submitted their ASR (it was born for the MK22 ASR solicitation) but unfortunately the trigger in one of the test rifles had an issue and wasn't chosen because of that. Bad stroke of luck.

I'm certain that if they had chosen the AI PSR during the PSR contract (as they should have) instead of the shitty Remington, that the ASR solicitation wouldn't have even happened. That's the way the cookie crumbled though.

Fair enough.

I always chuckle when I hear that about fluting. Some things just won’t die. FWIW, they did discuss proof barrels, and even noted some are in use within SOCOM.

I’m not necessarily bummed that AI didn’t get it, but the trigger failure was very unfortunate. Would have been nice to learn the results of a true head to head.

Obviously they floated enough boats to get the contract.
Remington really screwed the pooch on their opportunity.
I have about of much time on an AI as the MRAD
They are both pretty nice.
With such little experience I couldn’t say one was better than the other.

Shooting 300 Norma inside 1000 is certainly easy mode.

Several members here had screws shear in their shroud assemblies. He’s using that to take a swipe at AI.

“Several”? You mean the one guy in the thread recently where it was determined that there’s no way they could have possible just sheared the way they did and had to have been severely over tightened?

Ok so two rifles out of 30K+ had these bolts shear and it was almost positively due to overtightening, and it’s a problem. Got it 😂
Never said it was a problem
Just that it wasn’t just once.

Nothing is infallible.
Just like AI had a trigger go down in a test, that hardly means it’s crap.
They have an excellent reputation and they earned it.

I got to shoot the AI you referred to last week.
It’s a nice rifle, it didn’t break that day either!

If they passed field trials with a better statistical failure rate, and at a similar cost to the AI I'm 100% for them choosing an American company over a UK company.

And then, it's a company that has the balls to stand up to our government, while the other has "LE only" models not for us mere civies.

I'm just disappointed they paused fieldcraft production to meet contract demands.

Oh I’m totally on board with Barrett. Go America! I was simply saying that proclaiming the MRAD as “the best” is a bit over zealous in my opinion. Buy hey, that guy has done way more in life than me, so I’ll give him the respect that he deserves.

And yeah Ronnie Barrett standing up like that🇺🇸🇺🇸

He was part of the program that selected the MRAD over others including the AI, so it would make sense that he would say that.

This is becoming a big deal with all the services are going for it. Big Army buys more rifles than just about everyone else put together.

I think you’re right.

I don't have a problem calling a winner the best.

The criteria was set and AI failed when they tried to meet them. I will still own a AXSR before a MRAD though.

I agree, they obviously didn't like something to say the barrett was the best.

I'll own neither because I'm a poor. Not that I couldn't, but I enjoy having many more single purpose guns than switchbarrels that cost more than all those single purpose rifles.

.....
For a given barrel diameter, fluting will increase cooling rate since extra area is exposed, in addition to decreasing weight without sacrificing to much stiffness.
