Are there any negative effects, other than overall weight, of putting a fairly heavy scope on a light weight rifle? Say a T3X with an ATACR as an example.

People might comment on the confidence you have in your manhood - that would be issue #1. You most likely will also develop a passion for facial hair and a C5 Corvette. Lastly, you might find with a scope heavier than the rifle it is easier to shoot it upside down.

All kidding aside, your idea to invest in a scope that will progress as you move forward with longer reach heavier rifles, rather than cycling through cheaper "appropriate" scopes for the rifle you choose to afford at the time, is a good one.

Light rifles leaves room for a heavier scope and still keep the rifle under weight goal
Bingo. Lots of folks seem to think there's only a binary choice of light or heavy. I picked a Titanium action so that I could have a 30+ oz optic. I picked a carbon wrapped barrel so I could have an 11oz suppressor.

Weight counting is a hobby unto itself for a lot of guys on the hunting side. It's kind of like reloading, you can shave a couple ounces here or there just like you might cut a few fps off of an SD. The reality is that the majority of guys/gals aren't hiking enough or in good enough shape for the couple of ounces to matter, just like most reloaders aren't good enough shooters for a slightly smaller SD to matter.
