Had a cheapie MTM Casegaurd that works OK but looking for something more sturdy / capable / permament.

Suggestions?

I don't have a good recommendation, but I can rule one out for you. The Tipton Best Gun Vise. It is ok, but does not hold a rifle as securely as I would like and does not feel particularly sturdy (though I have not broken anything on it yet).

I'm looking at the Tipton Ultra.... still looks a little cheesy....

I have the Tipton Best gun vise.

Good for light work - cleaning, setting rings.

If I have heavier work to do I install a metal vice on my bench....this one from Brownells

Here it is in action fitting a new butt plate to a walnut stock....

I mounted the vise on an aluminum plate and it slides into T-tracks on my bench that usually secure my reloading press.

Its much maligned but for me the casual vise user it has been fine and versatile.

If I was considering it again Id probably by a 75 year old one off EBay, restore it and have full confidence it would last another 75 years.

Don't buy the Ultra ( I have the Best as well, it's fine for what it's used for- cleaning and installing scopes)

If you check reviews online for the Ultra- you'll find that due to poor design (friction fit only) of the vertical supports, they slip/fail- won't hold the rifle. Similar thread on a different forum, guy bought it anyway- and confirmed it was a fatal flaw. Too bad, otherwise looks like a versatile unit, if they would only redesign it so it would actually hold the rifle like it's supposed to do...
