I know this is a well discussed topic but I’m wanting to get the most up to do date and current collective info possible. What’s everyone’s opinions between these two adjustable gas blocks? I’m needing it for a 6.5 CM build with a 22” +2 gas system, it’s a .875 diameter. Is one more reliable than the other? This is my first attempt at the large frame ARs so I would like to do this right the first time.

SLR. Because its easier to adjust and there are tactile click adjustments. 1..2..3

My JP has 2 screws. A lock screw and adjustment screw. Loosen one, adjust the other, tighten back down the first. Rinse, repeat... And you have to pay attention to how much you turn it. Not to mention one is on the side and conflicts with certain hand guards.

Don't know about the new JP's, but the one I have is a bulky chunk that I bought cause it was available when I needed it.
The 4 x SLR's have been flawless and are about as small a form factor as you can get i.e. they fit in handguards.

Depends a lot on the barrel profile, JP's low profile detent version in .936 is more compact than the SLR. I started with the SLR for a 6.5 build and there was no way it was fitting under JP's handguard, so I went to the low profile JP and it fits with room to spare.

In the other gas block sizes, 0.75" or 0.875" JP's design is different and I think it matters less. Wish more companies would build handguards that are offset to the top, or were slotted open on top to allow for the slightly taller adjustable gas blocks. I see so many setups where there is basically zero room between the gas block and the handguard and you can easily flex the handguard into the gas block that it would not surprise me if barrel whip, bipod loading etc. is creating contact. I wish JP made their 0.936 style in 0.75 or 0.875 because IMO you can't have too much space between the gas block and handguard.

WOA has a nice solution, Instead of being 12,13,15" lengths their new TR handguards are 12.6" and 14.6" setup to end about 1/8" behind where the gas block starts in both rifle length and +2 lengths, so the gas tube is fully protected but there's no worries of gas block/handguard contact and you have full access to adjust the gas block.

I suggest SLR. I have had a dozen over the years and currently have 6 running on everything from precision guns to short sbr suppressed guns. They have all been very reliable and easy to adjust and use.

Okay, makes sense. I have a JP rapid configuration handguard that’s 17.5” long. So I will only really have access to it from the side in one of the circle holes in the tube. I should be able to access either. Do you think an SLR will have enough top clearance in the JP handguard?

Not sure, being .875" gains you a little more room than I had. SLR Sentry 8 product page says as long as you have 1.4" ID you should be okay, JP rapid config handguard is 1.75". I'd imagine the JP version is designed specifically to fit their handguard without issue.

Looking at the dimensional drawings for both the JP is 0.82" from center to clear the detent screw all the way out, 0.80" to the top of the block. The SLR appears to be 0.91" to the top of the block, so the JP appears to be significantly lower profile.

To me this seems confusing, the Sentry 8 product page says you only need a 1.4" ID handguard to work, but if the center of the block to the top of the block is 0.91" there's no way that's fitting under a 1.4" ID handguard unless it's offset upward. Especially since the diagram says the total top to bottom measurement is 1.52" :)

I just installed a JP handguard over a Superlative Arms adjustable gas block, and yeah, it fits, but just barely. I'll have to shoot it a bit, but I doubt barrel whip would be enough to cause contact as long as you have a few thousandths gap

I had the SLR Sentry 9 clamp with JP 22" barrel and 17.25" RC handguard and it barely fit. Matter of fact I installed the Superlative setscrew 0.936" version today and there is little more room vs Sentry 9. If JP made their detent adjust version in 0.936 I would get that without thinking twice just for the side adjustment. Both SA and Sentry 9 are annoying to adjust from the front.

The issue I found with the JP block I originally bought for a build was the set screw didn’t not line up with an access point in the hand guard so it made adjusting impossible without its removal. I went with the superlative and haven’t looked back.

Jp does make a .936 detent adjustable gas block...

You aren't actually tapping the gas block as I understand it, you are just scoring threads on the bottom of the gas tube so the adjustment screw threads mate with it. My guess is this helps keep the adjustments more consistent if you are counting number of detent clicks of adjustment say for going between a supressor and not. It's probably also to save every fraction of an inch of gas block height.
