I’ve heard various things over the years, such as that an M16 barrel will melt if run on full auto, and AR15 barrels are designed to melt much more quickly to discourage full auto conversion. Any truth to that?

At this point I have some aging ammo I want to take to the range and dispose of while it is still safe to shoot it. I’m a member at a range that allows rapid fire. In a civilian AR15 or M4, how rapidly can the rifle be fired without damaging the barrel? Any difference in that respect between 5.56 and supersonic 300bk?

You're not going to melt the barrel, but you will probably torch the throat.

I tested some 9mm made in 1952 and 3/22 did not go off, 2 of them had to be shot again and went off.. maybe would work better with stronger firing pin spring.

Still buying the whole 9k of it, it will be ok for training (with malfuntions). I hope my barrel will not melt.

Years ago we bought a bunch of USGI WRA WW2 .45 Ball reimported from Russia. Lots of it. Supposedly stored in caves. Corrosive. Shot tens of thousands with a only a few duds and one or two hang fires. Would have been 55 years old or so.

Melt a barrel I’ve done some pretty fast multi round dumps on 30 round mags no problem. To compare I needed to straighten out a bus crossing arm today. I used a rose bud today torch at around 2500-3000. It was a solid steel rod the size of a barrel I was able to bend it easily. If you get your barrel even up to 1500 degrees I would think your doing something. I did see some guys next to me one day trying to sight in AR just dumping the rounds. They couldn’t understand why it would group under 5”. I just mentioned you might want let it cool down and shoot it. I then let them shoot my suppressed ARs so they could at least hit a target.
