I signed up for a 10k where you have to be able to do all these obstacles and also engage torso sized steel out to 600 yards. Have to carry a rifle and pistol with 50-60 rds of each minimum.

The guy says ar platforms are usually the most competitive but I’m worried I won’t be able to hit jack at 600 with either of my ars. How hard will that shot be considering I’m in pretty good shape but have never even shot that far. Longest range I have to practice at is 400.

I have a dd mk18 10.5” and a bcm 14.5” with a pst gen2 1-8. Other option is to carry my ar10 5-25 but it’s crazy heavy.

Thanks

I would run the 14.5. Should have more than enough ass to get to 600. The -25 will just be heavier, and shoot essentially the same with more recoil. A hit is a hit so the additional energy is not really needed. Now a 6.5G AR may be a little more forgiving with wind but you should be fine. I would look into 69GR SMK, 75GR Hornady BTHP and 77GR SMK. Those will perform in the wind a bit better.

Make sure you build out your dope and find a 600 yard range to verify.

Upgading to a vortex G3 Razor would make it alot easier. More mag, better glass, better holdover reticle.

You'll wanna collect data, that's key. 600 is about the max for 14.5 and 62gr. ammo --you can push it a bit farther and then it goes trans and it's more about probability and less about skill. We trained SDM's on M4's and 600m was the max distance. With an ACOG.

77gr. will push it comfortably further with less effects on the round.

I was pretty good back in the day and ran a bunch of a stress shoots, my favorite was to just squat with a hasty sling, take the shot and move on. Damn near as good as prone if you're flexible enough to ball up and put your ass on your heels.

Good luck.

I've had my 16 inchers, 15" and 14.5's all to 800 with surprisingly good results. Just took the 13.7" out to 720 the other day and and maintained 60-70% hits with winds varying between 7 and 13mph. Posted video of it on here somewhere.
This is on a 16" circle, so about 200 square inches of target area. A full sized IPSC torso is over 450 inches. You'll be fine.

Are you in GA?

RBGC had a monthly "hunter rifle sight in" event that lets you shoot out to 600 yards and is open to the public. They alternate between a 200/300/600 high-power range and a metric steel silhouette range. Either would be good for you to get dialed in.

I'm assuming this is your first RNG? Have you done any other competitive shooting? The RBGC match is tough, but great. I RO'd last year. Be prepared for lots of obstacles, both while running and shooting. Don't get too hung up on having the perfect setup or gear. Just get your fitness squared away and know your dope.

Yeah, I’m hoping to get to rbgc to shoot and join. I have sponsors just waiting on all our schedules to align. It will be my first competition for shooting and also running.

I ran a 49 min 10k with a 20lb vest I’m hoping I can do the same with a rifle but not sure about that one. Going back and fourth on gear I have a couple different ideas and definitely need to shoot to 600. I heard it’s pretty hilly there also so I’m curious how much that’s going to affect everything.

My current setup is just a minimalist chest rig with 4 mags for rifle/pistol and a battle belt with a Glock 34. I’ve yet to run with my full kit but going to try this weekend maybe.

Your 14.5 with 77 or 69 SMKs (depending on what your rifle prefers) will get the job done at 600 man. Run the optic you have. It’s the best way to evaluate your equipment.

That sounds like a fun competition...I’m jealous. What’s the name of it?

Best of luck and let us know how it goes! 🍻

Any chance you were with a MTT from Bragg that came to Lewis in 08' ish and trained some FAG's(field artillery guys)and cav 👧?

I was gonna add depending on wind 600 should be 10/10 with a 14.5 and good ammo(and shooter). I was part of a long range marksman program that trained good shooters to become better shooters with the right equipment. Did m24's and m4 w/ACOG.

Our rack grade (beat to shit) M4's did well at 600 and under, 7 and 800 were 8/10, 6/10. At that point if you couldn't call your wind and hold it. You didn't hit squat.

Know your dope. Practice, succeed.

Sounds like you're close to ready. The course is very hilly, and it will be more difficult than just running. Guaranteed you'll be climbing walls, doing low crawls, and other obstacles along the way.

One other thing to keep in mind is the duration of the event. You might get stuck waiting at a stage to shoot. That can be an advantage or a curse. If wait times are bad you might end up baking in the sun for an extra half hour. I usually take 10-16 oz of water just in case. Depending on the match/course you might be out there for 2+ hrs which can be brutal depending on temps and shade.

River Bend Run and Gun. There are quite a few run and guns across the US. Usually 5-20k run with 5-10 2 gun shooting stages along the way. I highly recommend them to everyone as it's a great challenge. Everyone finds it harder than expected; experienced runners get smoked from the weight, hills, and obstacles while experienced shooters learn they suck when shooting stages blind and out of gas.

What are some other types of things they may have us do? From reading I have seen burpees, dragging things, carrying stuff.

Really looking forward to the challenge, I was going to do a tough mudder then saw the run n gun. The idea sounds fun anyway

I'm sure it's intended to be a surprise. Things I've seen at other events:

- Wall climbs(anything from 6-9 ft high)
- large a-frame ladder climbs
- low crawls
- slack line crossing
- assorted obstacle courses (over, under, through, etc)
- water crossings (could be knee deep or you can't touch the bottom)
- dummy drag/carry
- carry other stuff (logs, 20mm ammo can full of rocks, etc)
- tire flips
- natural terrain/obstacles (thick briars, hills, caves, mud, etc)

What Bruce has in mind for this one I don't know, and that's also the point. The course will have surprises. It's intended to stress you mentally and physically. Pace yourself and keep a clear head.

I was staff at the last RB run n gun. I used a 13.7 Noveske on a MK6 with 55gr to make the the 600 yard shot. Between what you have, running the 14.5 would likely be the best bet. Given the weight of an AR10 plus an optic like that, I wouldn't go down that route for the sake of a single stage.
