338 Norma Action

I have no experience with building on the Impact as a whole.

However, I have built multiples on Defiance/Kelbly/Stiller from 223 to 300RUM.

I have a Defiance and Kelbly on order for future builds and have no reservations recommending them.

That being said, there is hardly a "bad" action out there now and days.

I say Defiance... I have 2 300 Normas on Defiance actions and I can't think of a better action to base it off of.

Does anyone know of i can make it a switch barrel 300 / 338 norma on a Mausingfield?
/
Yes, I have two.

The only problem I have had is an adjustable cheekpiece can block the bolt coming all the way to the rear which is required for effective ejection.

Bottom metal can be a challenge. I went BDL to use the extra COAL of a Wyatt's extended box.

I personally prefer the Impact which is also available with the Lapua bolt face and action cut for the Lapua case. Strictly personal preference but there is too much going on with the Mausingfield for my tastes. Simple is good.

I am also moving away from switch barrel rifles. Good in theory, but there is a reason most rifles are dedicated to one caliber.

Good luck.

- Terminus 100% if it’s 60 degree your after
- defiance for a higher end 90 degree
- kelbly for a budget 90 degree (every bit as good as the others at a few hundred less!!!)

Dont know much about the Mausingfield but it looks like a solid option. Anyone give any feedback in how they run.

My "match" rifle is an M5 Mausingfield, for which I have a 6BRA and 6.5 Creedmoor barrels. It's one of my favorite actions, if not my absolute favorite action. When timed with a trigger, the bolt lift and bolt close is exceptionally light. The action runs like a sewing machine, and has no issues at all in really adverse conditions with high wind and debris. Never had an issue with extraction, or any other action related reliability issues with the Mausingfield.

My .300NM is built on a Defiance, with polished rails and DLC surface treatment. Silky smooth, haven't had any reliability issues, but haven't really shot it for extended periods in adverse conditions. I haven't had any issues with it, but my rifle does run into pressure earlier then other .300NM's. In other threads, I've heard mention/reference to pressure being encountered early in large caliber systems in actions that have "smaller" lugs. The Defiance does have small(ish) lugs for a lapua bolt faced cartridge, or so I am told. I've talked to a few different people about whether that should cause early pressure issues or not, with no real consensus on that subject.

Lot's of good actions out there these days. Lone Peak makes a great action with their Fuzions, so that's also worth a look. A Surgeon 1581XL is a great candidate, but you are limited on stocks and chassis that have that footprint, and the tennon requires barrels with a larger tennon OD (1.35" I believe), which limits your barrel options and drives up price a bit.

Thanks for the review on your experience. I ordered the Mausingfield, cant wait to receive it.

Looking to possibly build a 338 Norma. I have a couple of Bighorn TL3’s and love the action, however Bighorn Long Action is a no go for 338N.

Thinking about going with a Impact 787R. Anyone build a Norma on that action.
@Sportin Wood is selling the action you need in the PX.
my 300 norma Mag Improved is built on that same BAT HR and it is strong, smooth and beautifully made.

I’d also look at a ARC mausingfield.
You don’t need the CIP magazines for it but I’d probably go that route anyways in case you want to shoot the 300 grain A tips.
Are the A tips that much longer than the 300 gr SMK's? One of Jimmy Sloans original design criteria was to have an OAL that would fit in a standard long action with a 300gr SMK.

Well with the Berger and SmK 300 and Hornady 285eldm works really nice in a regular lapua magazine.
The a tips are longer and to maintain similar seating a CIP magazine should be GTG.
I think they’re about .07 longer.
